Freedom of Speech for Conservatives is a Luxary we can no longer afford!
As many have pointed out, Imus's comments are mild compared to the statements of Rush Limbaugh or Glen Beck or Sean Hannity or Ann Coulter. Yet they are given a pass while Imus walks the plank. I submit however that even focusing on the occasional racial, ethnic, or gendered slur misses the root problem of Conservatism.

Conservatism cannot survive the truth.

This is something I think most of us know in our bones; it barely bares repeating. Conservatism is based on lies and deception and in fact it cannot survive as a movement without lies and deception. Knowledge of the facts combined with a thinking mind and a moral heart leads one inevitably to Liberalism. The truth is Liberalism is the correct answer. Why then do so many end up conservatives?

Well in some sad cases people are unable to process information correctly. They are either too stupid or too crazy to figure out the right answer. While we feel sympathy for such people, certainly we do not want them running things.

Secondly, many are immoral and see value in espousing Conservatism. Rush Limbaugh may well know how crazy and wrong the stuff he says is; but chooses to continue saying it because spewing conservative filth has bought him a very very very comfortable life.

There's really very little we can do about people in these two categories; fortunately there is a third category of people who we can do something about; the ill informed.

I compared our society elsewhere to a communal lake. We are surrounded all the time, whether we like it or not, by information. The sad truth is that a lot of that information is in fact misinformation; filth provided by conservatives. How can people find the truth if they are surrounded by lies? And what can we do to help our fellow citizens who are drowning in this conservative filth?

We can clean up the lake. We can stop Rush Limbaugh, Sean Hannity, Ann Coulter, and others from filling our lake of information with their false and degrading filth. We not only have the right to protect ourselves and our fellow citizens from their filth, we have the duty to do so.

Does this mean censorship? No. We cannot give our government the mechanisms to silence free speech. Rather such mechanisms belong in the hands of the people, organized and together. If we could organize massive boycotts of every product that advertises on the Rush Limbaugh show, for example, how quickly would he be off the air, no longer spewing his filth? Imus's fall shows that it is possible; all we need is the will to do the right thing.

Under milder times we might be able to tolerate a little filth; but these are not mild times. Everyday soldiers and innocent Iraqis are dying, in part because we foolishly failed to clean the lake. Would Bush and his cronies been able to deceive this nation into war without the help of his buddies Limbaugh and Hannity? I doubt it. Admittedly there's a secondary question of what should be done to the "mainstream" media that allowed this deception to take place. But first lets take care of the filth producers and then we can work on those systems who transmitted the filth.

Who's with me?

Final note; I am of course being cynical and sarcastic.

1. The problem begins for 'libs' by listening to them in the first place. .
It gets us all riled up!!! I'm not lying when I tell you that I had no idea who Imus is until this week when he made his "ho" remark. I have never listened to Rush or any other of the talk show people.

Maybe it puts me out of touch with reality and what is going on in the world but I'm a very old lady who is hearing impaired, doesn't have cable TV, but I read a daily newspaper, listen to the nightly news and get most of my info from the Internet or DU.

This is why when Duers refer news broadcaster and talk show hosts with nicknames and initials, I have no idea who you are referring to and it must be difficult for newcomers to understand what is going on, too.

2. Still, I have no sympathy for Imus.
He's a racist pig. Hannity, Rush and Company are even bigger racist pigs!

3. Who is Hannity? You guys are obsessed with racists talk show hosts
I'm obsessed with the Internet and spend a great deal of my time as a Native American activist editing and formatting my Native Unity blog.

I guess it is what turns you on! I use DU mostly as a reference for news and Info.

4. Sean Hannity has an afternoon radio show and is the host of Hannity
and Liberal to be Determined on the Fox Network; if you ever read Lies and the Lying Liars who tell them, there's a good coverage of his particular pernicious shtick.

8. I don't know what you mean by that
I was just trying to be helpful, but as it turns out while my involvement with Native Americans is not substantial, it is not non-existent either; we had a Navajo Indian living with us my freshman and sophemore years of high-school (so he could do his Senior year of High School and then do some college), and went out to visit his family on the reservation.

Thank you for the link though.

5. Because their shit still reaches millions of sheeple each day...
who buy into this shit. There is a sizable portion of this country that would like to see people such as you and I, how do I put this........"DEAD"! Literally DEAD! They have nothing but the most vile contempt for us. I do agree that the Internet is doing for our side what hate radio has done for Conservatives.

10. OK Ax - You take care of them and I'll tend to my mother's people.
PS - I plan on dropping dead from the aneurysm in my stomach at Wal-Mart's pharmacy near the blood pressure machine just for the Hell of it. That sounds like one groovy way to go BUT This is not a good die to die. I have too much to do!

7. Imus is free to speak.
His freedom of speech is entirely intact. He has no right or entitlement to his job on msnbc or cbs radio, last time I checked the constitution.

I, by the way, have every right to speak up about Imus and to suggest that sponsoring his vile blather will steer my purchases to another vendor. I don't have quite the audience that Imus has, but that could change.

Free speech is healthy and alive.

9. Exactly, and that's the problem
Wouldn't it be better if you had the power, through DU and the liberal community, to drive voices like Imus, Limbaugh, Hannity, et al off of the air?
