Take Action: Schwarzenegger Seeks Feedback on Legislation


California Gov. Arnold Schwarzenegger is looking for input on legislation, including SB 572, which designates May 22 as Harvey Milk Day. Gay activists across the country are encouraging their supporters to back the bill, which would direct California schools to celebrate one of the first openly homosexual politicians. Family advocates are encouraged to weigh in, as well.

Schwarzenegger vetoed a similar bill last year and has decided to seek public opinion before making a decision this time.

On Twitter, the governor posted: "Some interesting bills coming down. Give me your thoughts on … Harvey Milk Day."

Candi Cushman, education analyst at Focus on the Family Action, said it's important for family advocates to encourage another veto.

"This bill is bad news for parents and taxpayers because it introduces yet another school day that students are supposed to spend celebrating homosexuality," she said. "Harvey Milk Day would unnecessarily sexualize and politicize the school environment at a time when kids don't even have enough textbooks."
