Yesterday, Orrin Hatch attended the funeral of a close friend.
Edited on Sun Aug-30-09 11:42 AM by Avalux
Today, he's on CNN pushing the GOP talking points about health insurance reform and worse - using Ted Kennedy's name to push 'compromise' and no public option.

Yesterday, the contempt I had for Hatch lifted a little and I saw him as a human being. He had a chance to change my mind by taking Kennedy's cause under his wing and speak the truth, not his party's lies. Obviously it was too much to expect and today, I am back to feeling utter contempt for Orrin Hatch.

3. I'm 51 years old and I'm still trying to figure out how you can call someone a friend...
... when you consider him to be an icon of everything that is wrong with the country. I can have acquaintances whose company I enjoy and whose politics I totally oppose. I can laugh at a comedian who is telling offensive jokes. I can hang out with people I consider to be my inferiors is some or every way and have fun. But I can't call any of these people friends. Friend is a word which has a meaning, a specific meaning. That's why we have all those other words which mean things like "someone I have some respect for" or "someone I work with" or "someone who lives next door" or "someone who takes care of me" or "someone I take care of" or "someone I know, but we're not friends".

It sickens me when politicians misuse the word "friend" or refer to someone as their "dear friend" or "long time friend" when clearly these people cannot be friends, and clearly if they are then they have fooled us all and betrayed our trust.

4. Yep!
I felt for Senator Hatch when he spoke on Friday evening, it was clear he will miss his good friend very much. I wish he had just said NO to any appearance today out of respect for his friend. He doesn't have to turn around and champion the health care cause but, damn, he could, at least, refuse to be the face and voice of the rabid right wing opposition to the reform his good friend called "the cause of his life", imo.

6. That's what bothers me the most. Kennedy hasn't been in the ground 24 hours yet -
and Hatch is all over the TV, spewing lies. At least take a few days off out of respect. x(

5. I acknowledged his grief
But anything more in terms of respect he has to earn. I won't hold my breath. He's claiming Teddy would want to compromise it all away, thusly deliberately trying to diminish his friend's well earned reputation as a true Liberal. He's a self-serving dandy.

15. That's the line the GOP and Blue Dog Dems will use now.
They will claim Teddy would have wanted compromise so they can defeat REAL reform with a public option or single payer and get what they want. They will use him to their advantage and he isn't here to defend himself. I hope his family steps up and sets the idiots straight.

8. Sen. Kennedy apparently was able to
disregard a person's political views - no matter how neanderthal - as he formed friendships. Hatch strikes me as a waste of DNA, but Kennedy knew and liked him, so I'll assume he has some sort of redeeming human quality Ted saw that I don't. I generally believe that if you want to know the character of a person, look at his friends. Not the case here.

9. I wish Teddy III was out of college. He'd wipe the floor with these hypocrites....

He's capable of it now, I have no doubt, but to push him further into the spotlight is probably not best for this young man, at this age.

13. There's something very unique about that child.
He seems to be a very old soul in a child's body. He seems to be ready to take on anything at age 11 and seems to know what that might entail. I don't know what I think about re-incarnation but anything's possible. ;-)

18. I agree...
He was adorable and wise. It broke my heart to see him weeping over Teddy's coffin at the gravesite. That kid will really miss his grandpa --and my guess is grow up to embody him.
