OK, FrontPage geniuses.
Edited on Mon Aug-31-09 07:04 PM by graywarrior
I want to either eliminate or not send up pages of our website. We want to bring it down to 3 or 4 pages, but not get rid of the ones we don't want to use right now--just in case.

How do I do that without destroying my universe?

I meant to put this in the Lounge, but everyone over there is drunk by now so what the hell.

3. FrontPage?! Uh-oh, this should be good... BTW: Download SharePoint Designer
http://www.microsoft.com/DOWNLOADS/details.aspx?FamilyID=baa3ad86-bfc1-4bd4-9812-d9e710d44f42&displaylang=en

Designer is free and puts out much cleaner code than FrontCrap ever will... (I still prefer dreamweaver, sitegrinder, or even HTML circa 1990, but it's all good...)

9. Here's a very general answer that may not help at all
I've never used Frontpage, so take this with a huge grain of salt...

Can you just rename the pages you want to "take down" but not remove, by adding "BAK" or something to the file names?

Like, if you have a page called "page6.htm" can you just manually rename it "page6BAK.htm" and just leave it where it is?

Maybe I'm not really understanding the question though...

...the flap-coil valve burner starts smokin' and the hydropin spinner is burnin' off the manifold drive. You may have to over-flood the drive in case you get some of that last pylon tryin' to underplate that hydro-coil, and if you can't do that, you're gonna have to shut her down...

16. Serious reply...
I don't know what version of FP you have, but if you have navigation bars set up, click for the Navigation View in Front Page. Right click on the pages you want to remove from view, click "Include in Navigation Bars" to remove the check mark

Then open your index page and save it. That will refresh the navigation bar and all the links in it. Then publish the web and you won't see the pages. They'll still be there, and you can still work on them in FP or navigate to them by adding the page's file name to your URL.

They won't be deleted from either your PC or the server, and you can restore them at any time by reversing what you did in the navigation view.

26. Oh, I do, but I still try to help sometimes.
Ignore the naysayers about Front Page. As long as you don't do anything tricky with it, it produces perfectly decent web sites. Some of the stuff, like database connectivity, sucks, but if you don't use any of the fancy stuff, it works just fine.

I've been using it since its first version. I can code html, and write javascripts, but my sites are simply page displays and FP works just fine. I'm still using FP2000. Can't find a reason to upgrade.

Anyhow, go in peace...

Naysayers usually have good points about Microsoft's dilettante product - particularly when it comes to the sloppy output it makes. Developers have known that for years. And most developers try to make their sites browser-independent by default. Front-page is notoriously IE-centric.

35. Depends how you use it, actually.
My sites have always worked fine in any browser. I dislike the attitude that pros have toward products aimed at amateurs. The product worked just fine for casual web sites, and, once you learn it's little weird stuff, you can do a lot with FP.

Bottom line is that if you don't like the program, you shouldn't use it. I almost never even look at the HTML unless there's a problem. There rarely is a problem.

Right now, the only thing I miss is being able to easily use CAPTCHA in my ancient version of FP. I'd like to enable a couple of things for one of my sites, but it's not that important.

The important thing is that someone who is using FrontPage asked a question about it. Rather than whining about how crummy the program is, I told the OP how to solve the particular problem. Not everyone needs to be an HTML whiz to build a web site. Some folks just want to do something simple on the web and FrontPage can do that. It's not even available any more, but there are still lots of people using it.

Being helpful, rather than sarcastic seems like a good idea when someone asks a question, don't you think?

37. And when mom/pop clients
want to work on their own site after it's built, FP is a very useful tool as well.

I put in a validation box on my forms. I made it equal to 333, but you can do any variation. It hasn't eliminated spam, but it's cut it down by about 75%.

39. I tried having a guestbook for a subsection of my site that
is a series of pages about a remote USAF base. Even using validation, the guestbook got spammed with porn junk. I don't have time to moderate it, so I had to clean it up and shut it down. It's still visible as an archive.

32. Why?
Why go through all that headache when you can just gather them up in the task pane, stick them in a folder, and be done with it.

Or maybe it's because I don't ftp, I work directly on my server. ??

Doing it the way I suggested keeps them available if you want to pop them back into view. Lots of ways to do things.

36. I don't use the navigation bar
I was thinking more in terms of cleaning up the folders and pages. I use find/replace when I want to remove or change links. But I suppose if someone used the navigation bar, that would be the fastest way to remove links. At least it helped graywarrior!

38. In Front Page, the Hyperlinks view is also very useful, since
it displays all pages with links to and from a selected page. It's a pretty quick way to make sure you don't have dead pages with links to them. I've used it quite a bit when reconfiguring my site over the years.

33. Remove links to the pages you no longer want to use from your Index page
You can have a brazillion HTML files sitting in your directory, but unless there are links pointing to them, they're effectively eliminated from the site.

Keep a backup copy of the old index page just in case you want it back, but that's the quickest way I know to do what you want.
