10. Not really - No Empire has ever willingly "cured" itself.
.
.
.

Empires grow until they piss everybody off so much that the rest of the World squashes them.

Military might is not enough to rule the World.

RESPECT is needed.

No Empire has earned the World's respect yet.

USA included. I think the warmongers confuse fear with respect.

Imagine if the USA spent as much money in humanitarian aid as they do on their War-Machine?

THAT would gain some respect; but it will take decades to undo the ill-will created by all the carnage they have involved themselves with in the last few centuries.

Indiscriminate slaughter tends to stick in people's memories for a wee bit . .

14. I beg your pardon,...I do not believe there has ever BEEN an empire,...
,...any more than there has been a socialism or communism, a Christian(ism) or Buddhism,...

I think,...we have to take on particular human beings rather than "ISMS" (empirialism, fascism, communism, etc) if we are to acquire some sort of social/economic justice through democracy.

4. One does wonder and it seems as if those voices of hate are
overwhelming.

I too despair but we mustn't give up hope or stop caring. Love for one another and caring and sharing are the answers. Don't let those haters turn your soul towards bitterness.

I am working on 'loving' them even though it is very hard to do.

Hopefully we will be able to turn this country around and create a better place for our children and grandchildren.

11. No. What I find "overwhelming" is the attention to the HATE.
What I KNOW is a people who CARES about more than themselves, INVESTS their lives into MORE than "ME".

What is NOT REFLECTED IN VIEWS RATHER THAN NEWS is an,...

,...INCREDIBLE PEOPLE, WHO WEATHERS ALL TRAGEDIES AND PERSISTS ALL POLITICAL BATTLES.

What bugs the shit out of me is this: the vast majority of Americans WANT TO TAKE CARE OF EACHOTHER!!! They want us ALL to have our basic needs met and to have AN OPPORTUNITY to get in the race of 'capitalism'. But, the corporateers have the money to do as Hitler did and manipulate the hopes of people.

The corporacrats have been allowed, for too long, to MANIPULATE people.

5. Two previous replies nailed it. We've just let the mask slip a little lately.
The ideals behind it's founding were, and still are, revolutionary. The reality has failed.

15. Many places on this planet have overcome their savagery much better than we have, though.
Scandinavia is one example ... The land of raping and pillaging Vikings is now incredibly civilized compared to the USA. Go figure.

16. Read Upton Sinclair's "The Jungle"
Believe it or not, it used to be worse.

Really and truly, as imperfect as the U.S. is now, this is the best it has ever been.

Mainly because liberals have slowly, with blood and toil, made it better.

And we continue to try to do so.

17. We just didn't know until the Internet.
The Internet has given everyone the opportunity to say that which would earn them a fist in the teeth in any other situation.
