South Carolina Speaker Asks Sanford to Resign

House Speaker Bobby Harrell, R-Charleston, Tuesday became perhaps the most powerful South Carolina politician to call on Gov. Mark Sanford to resign.

In a letter delivered to Sanford today, Harrell said Sanford’s resignation would allow the state to move forward from the distractions created by Sanford’s secret trip to Argentina in June and the subsequent confession that he’d been engaged in an extramarital affair.

In a press release, Harrell said:

"What has become clear is that Governor Sanford’s issues will continue to dominate our state as long as he remains in office. Whether he should be re-moved from office is a question that will need to be answered from the State Ethics Commission investigation, but our state’s future is too important to have the Governor’s issues overshadow everything we do for the next fifteen months. For the good of our state, Governor Sanford should step aside."

Sanford has refused all calls to resign, even from some of his closest friends in politics.

Harrell’s announcement comes at a time when House colleagues have made clear the governor should resign or face impeachment.

3. Even if God had a press conference and asked Sanford to resign he would stay.
These guys hate giving up their power and he knows it's all over if he resigns.

6. Especially members of "The Family."
Their mantra is that the rules don't apply to them.

Sanford going to make them drag all his skanky laundry through the public square. All the time crying victim.

Beyond pathetic.

7. they are above the laws. And all they have to do is say that they prayed and God forgave them.
Making them a much better person.
