Soldier Re-Enlisted For Healthcare, Killed In Afghanistan (Video)....
Edited on Tue Sep-08-09 04:32 PM by BlooInBloo
Sigh. Everything bad rolled into one story.

http://www.huffingtonpost.com/2009/09/08/soldier-who-re-enlisted-f_n_279776.html

"Army Spc. Gregory James Missman died in Afghanistan after suffering wounds from an improvised explosive device in July.

Missman, 36, re-enlisted in the military after being laid off from his job as a computer consultant. Missman served in the Army 11 years earlier.

According to Missman's father, health care is what pushed his son back into service. After losing his job, Missman's young family, a wife and son were no longer insured."

4. There's a death insurance plan as I understand it
and dependents are eligible for Social Security benefits.

Hopefully that small something can end up getting parlayed into a big something via the kids. :(

7. What is supposed to happen is
Edited on Tue Sep-08-09 10:34 PM by Solly Mack
Once notified, a certain amount is paid out for burial within days ( death gratuity ) & before the insurance is settled. Often the family can remain in military housing (or similar arrangements) for a certain period of time while arrangements are made and things are finalized.(benefits settled: retirement, transition payments, SS, etc..)

It doesn't always go that smoothly. There are horror stories.
