19. I read that, and I surprised to find they actually interviewed some kids who did see it

in a favorable fashion. It made the adults who skipped the speech look pretty dumb. Mostly because they obviously are.

From the article:

In Grand Island, a fifth grade class of future nurses, builders, and engineers were all ears.

"You're going to need a good education for every single one of those careers," Pres. Obama said. "You cannot drop out of school and drop into a good job."

At Gates Elementary, kids heard a message of taking responsibility for their education.

Jackson said the message was "to go for you goals. If you don't go for your goals you won't be able to do what you want to do."

"And if you fail you learn from failure," Isaiah added.

Conner said, "If you're not doing well and have to drop out you won't have the job you want."

While another fifth-grader, Sam said, "If you quit school you're not going to get a good job."

13. OK a question...

If they're not smart enough to realize that a presidential speech to our children is a good thing and can inspire some of the kids to want to do well and do good things with their lives, then why do we want to make them look like they ARE intelligent enough to believe that?

Seriously.

I think this whole flap over the speech was probably one of the best pieces of political theater in a long time.

Imagine...a bunch of RW braindead zombies getting their knickers in a twist over a fucking speech by the President, and it's about as innocuous as any speech could ever be. We couldn't plan it any better than that...they do all the work at making themselves look even crazier than they are...

Anyway, as much as I'd love to, I'm not going to DU that poll...a PODUNK poll, at that. I don't want to be a part of helping them to look sane when they're not.

24. You're free to disagree. I see it this way. The outside world at large will not be looking at this

little poll to judge the people of Central Nebraska, but the people of Central Nebraska will see the results of this poll reported on the local evening news in about half an hour. The people around here are religious about the local evening news.

Skewing this poll will, I hope, serve the function of making those who were against the President of the United States speaking to school children to urge them to stay in school and work hard feel isolated and out of step with their peers for holding that view.

I want them to doubt themselves, if only for a moment. I want them to know they are wrong. I want them to see on their own news station that they are on the wrong side of this "issue."
