Media Matters ~ Breitbart burns R/W media with false claim "Community Organizers Pray TO Obama"

Glenn Beck, Lou Dobbs, and prominent conservative bloggers followed the lead of conservative website Breitbart.tv after the site falsely claimed that an online video showed community organizers from the Gamaliel Foundation "pray" to President Obama. Breitbart.tv subsequently updated the original post with an editor's note acknowledging that "there is a debate over what is actually being said" and that the crowd may, in fact, be saying "oh God" rather than "Obama"; the Gamaliel Foundation subsequently stated that "at no time have we prayed to President Obama" and that in the video, the organizers "can be heard saying, 'Hear our cry oh God,' 'Deliver us oh God,' etc."

On December 4, 2008, 500 leaders from 35 interfaith organizations from across the United States led a New Orleans style funeral march to the Washington offices of United Health care to demonstrate the need for comprehensive healthcare reform that provides medical coverage for every American citizen.

At that demonstration, several members representing Gamaliel Foundation affiliates spoke. Below are excerpts of what was said:

As a faith-based organization, it is customary for Gamaliel Foundation affiliates to begin and end every action with prayer. At no time, however, have we prayed to President Barack Obama. In the form of call and response, those who took part in the UnitedHealthcare action can be heard saying, “Hear our cry oh God,” “Deliver us oh God,” etc.

It is obvious that those who took the time to distort our sincere action for healthcare reform, by posting their own edited version on the Internet, are against what we believe is a fundamental right.

8. Breitbart is the guy who hosted the Acorn tapes.

He's a Drudge protege, amongst other things. The Dems handed them a victory and they are even more rabid now than they ever were.

The problem is that decent people like this group, are always on the defensive. Breitbart et al

lie with impunity and it's useless to provide them with facts as they know they are lying. All that matters to them is creating an impression.

Breitbart's vicious tirade against Kennedy after his death should disgust any decent person.

I'm not sure how to stop these lies. They are not rational people so the normal ways of exposing liars doesn't work with them. Once exposed, they move on to the next because there are never any consequences.

Thanks for keeping up with their activities mzmolly. Hopefully the name Breitbart will become synonymous with 'liar' and when people see his name they will simply dismiss what he has to say.

Maybe not on this case, but it seems like at some point, one of his 'projects' would qualify as libelous.

13. I was hoping one of the ACORN workers who was definately

libeled on his blog, Juan Carlos Vera, would find a way to go after them. He lost his job as a result of their little stunt. But I suppose people like Juan Carlos, a really decent man, would not want to have any further dealings with such vile specimens of humanity. I think he probably had a good case though.

Most of the people who probably had a case, probably don't have the money. And if the left was any good, we would have seen an organized effort to support these people financially if they wanted to sue. But while the right is organized and funded, the left which was supposed to be organizing, Netroots Nation, Moveon etc. those organizations are 'too respectable' and mainstream now, more concerned about their image, than what they started out claiming to represent.

mzmolly. We should make Breitbart a household name before he gets any credibility with decent people.

They amaze me really. They never miss a chance to go after people. They must be getting paid quite a bit for their efforts, because they never take a break. And they don't strike me as the type of people who would do it for nothing ~ that's something I'd like to know, the whole financial network behind them. They are very nervous about having that exposed ~ :-)

it is relevant to the case, imo as it is the funders, more so than the tools they used, O'Keefe et al, who caused the harm.
