UK vaccine progam in chaos after 14yr old vaccine death, US defers decison on using Cervarix
The U.S. drugs safety agency deferred an expected decision to approve Cervarix for use in the U.S. as a result of Natalie's death;

Natalie Morton, who attended the Blue Coat Church of England School in Coventry, died in hospital after receiving the Cervarix jab.

Coventry Primary Care Trust today said it had halted vaccinations for two days while an investigation into Natalie's death is carried out.

The Department of Health has refused to say whether it would still allow tens of thousands of girls across the country to receive the jab in the months ahead.

But there were calls for the entire cervical cancer vaccination programme to be suspended amid fears parents would now boycott it in the wake of Natalie's death.

15. Its not dismissive of the life. Only of the false causation
If you give 1.4 million people a shot, some of those were going to die the next hour/day/week, irrespective of a flu shot.

4. She had a "serious underlying medical condition" - the vaccination programme has resumed
Schools resume anti-cancer jabs

Cervical cancer vaccination programmes in UK schools are resuming following the news that a 14-year-old girl died shortly after having the jab.

Tests have shown Natalie Morton had a "serious underlying medical condition" and the jab was "most unlikely" to have caused her death, NHS Coventry said.

14. This girl's death is tragic, but a million British schoolgirls have had this jab with no problems.
Edited on Wed Sep-30-09 09:58 PM by Jackeens
Trust me, I'm nervous about these things - but you have to take in to account the fact that she had a "serious underlying medical condition".

For what it's worth, from the BBC report linked above:

Philip Stevens, director of health at International Policy Network think tank, said the chance of developing a severe, life-threatening reaction to the vaccine was around one in a million.

"The probability of a British woman developing cervical cancer over her lifetime is one in 136, or 0.74% - that's 7,400 times greater," he said.

"The risks of taking the vaccine are therefore many, many times smaller than not taking the vaccine and going on to develop cervical cancer."

He warned against another MMR (measles, mumps and rubella) scare, saying similar fears about the cervical cancer jab would lead to avoidable suffering and death in the future.

16. There is growing evidence that
Girls who already have HPV and then get this vaccination greatly increase their odds of getting cancer.

I have never liked the fact that this was pushed through so quickly in the US and then mandated by law in some states. Too much money for the drug companies for too little benefit. Cervical cancer is one of the cancers that is most easily caught and treated. Any girl/woman who has regular check ups and pap smears should not get cervical cancer. So, I do not intend to have my daughter vaccinated.

20. No there isn't. What IS true is that the vaccine isn't effective once someone already has HPV
For people who have HPV, the vaccine doesn't increase the risk of cancer, but it doesn't prevent it either. That is why the vaccine is given to younger girls.

23. The anti-vaccine crowd doesn't care about credibility
They're like Republicans- they'll say or repeat anything to further their whack agendas.

And- just like Republicans- some will fall for their scare tactics, to their own and their families' detriments.

33. Would you be so kind as to define your term... "anti'vaccine crowd"
Who, in your mind, is part of this crowd.

I know at the clinic that I run that we sometimes do recommend against vacinnes on a case to case basis. We also support vacinnations where appropriate but we usually recommend a changed schedule and certain vacinnes over others for our patients.

Does that make our clinic part of the "whack agenda."

If so then I suggest that you spend some time in patient care before making that judgement carte blanche, and if not then please refrain from broad brush attacks as they do not serve to further communication or education. Just my 2 cents.

34. My own definition of 'anti-vaccine crowd'...
is those who
(a) consider those who choose to have vaccines or support vaccination programmes to have corrupt motives, be 'sheeple', or otherwise morally unsound
or
(b) consider that any evidence that is found that vaccines or a particular vaccine don't have a particular negative consequence must have been faked or twisted to suit someone's financial interests
or
(c and most of all) are prepared to accept right-wing conspiracy sites and the like as valid sources of evidence against vaccines.

24. She had cancer
http://news.bbc.co.uk/1/hi/health/8284517.stm

A girl who was vaccinated against cervical cancer died from a malignant tumour and not from a reaction to the jab, it has been revealed.

Natalie Morton, 14, died after being given the Cervarix jab at the Blue Coat Church of England School in Coventry.

A pathologist said the cause of death was a malignant tumour of the chest.

It affected both her heart and lungs.

27. Apparently yes. That is the real scandal.
In fact if she had cancer at such a serious stage, she probably should NOT have had a vaccine, and it may well have accelerated her death, which would have occurred soon anyway. Which is awful, but not as awful as having a serious form of cancer undiagnosed till too late.. Unfortunately, you don't expect it in children so young.

The other possibility, I suppose is that it was diagnosed and that she was receiving chemo, which again may have made a vaccination unsafe, and that somehow this was not communicated to the school.

In any case, the real moral is that we have to be far more aware of cancer in children.
