Daliy Kos' annetteboardman: Padang in Better Days
Between yesterday and today there have been four earthquakes ranging between 5.0 and 7.6 on the Richter scale within 140 miles of Padang, West Sumatra (the 7.6 and 5.5 ones were 35 and 25 miles from the city, respectively, very much within the habitation area of the city, which has between 750 and 800 thousand residents). I was fortunate to visit West Sumatra in 2004, less than six months before the December 26th tsunami. When I was preparing for the trip I read a lot about the geological circumstances of the area, and was prepared for earthquakes and even tsunamis when I was visiting (we stayed in a beachfront hotel one night there).
