Sen. Jon Kyl Holds Up Unemployment Extension. Hundreds Of Thousands Fall Off Rolls.
Edited on Sat Oct-10-09 05:25 PM by Are_grits_groceries
Washington -- Key Senate Democrats tried unsuccessfully today to quickly pass legislation to give jobless workers in Michigan and other hard-hit states an additional 20 weeks of unemployment benefits.

That delays action on the high-stakes issue until at least next week.

<snip>

Today's failed effort to quickly pass a bill followed the unveiling of a compromise bill by Senate Majority Leader Harry Reid of Nevada and key allies. The bill would give all states an extra 14 weeks of jobless benefits, plus an extra six weeks for states with unemployment rates of 8.5 percent or greater.

<...> Reid introduced the bill after reaching a deal with Sen. Jeanne Shaheen of New Hampshire, who had balked at the House-passed bill, which only gives extra benefits to the hardest-hit states.

<...> But when Reid asked senators to quickly pass the bill under a speedy procedure, Sen. Jon Kyl, R-Ariz., objected. That's enough to prevent a quick vote.

Kyl said he wanted to have time to look at the proposal and consider possible Republican amendments, and also ask the independent Congressional Budget Office to estimate its cost.

<...> While objecting to quick passage, Kyl said he expects "at the appropriate time," Republicans will "be able to work out some kind of agreement."

When somebody pulls this shit, they should have their salary docked a brazillion dollars a day.

People aren't spending this money on golden bath fixtures. They want to effing eat.

"At the appropriate time" my ass.

10. I don't know.
The rules of the Senate are intricate sometimes. At times, Reid is bound by them, and at others he may just be extending a long-recognized courtesy.

I say screw all of that. They are saying no to everything. Reid needs to either read the rules more closely or use some trick. There are a lot of ways to maneuver, but I don't trust Reid to use them.

Senator Byrd is wicked good at the rules, but I don't think he's up to par anymore.

state he was against extending benefits because it would take away incentive to find work, even if that means having to move.

For example, I just had an argument with a libertarian buddy who said that a national healthcare system would create a spawn of slackers and lay-abouts and didn't want his tax money going towards it. He had no answer when I pointed out that mass-indigence has yet to occur in any of the European countries or Canada since they've instituted a single-payer system.

These folks just don't want to pay for it, plain and simple. They love their money more than they love their country (to paraphrase Jon Stewart).

First he wanted to leave maternity care out of the HCR legislation he wasn't going to vote on anyway. Then he voted against the Franken amendment to the Defense Appropriations bill that would punish contractors if they "restrict their employees from taking workplace sexual assault, battery and discrimination cases to court."

I know what it is: Vile Kyl hates Americans, especially America women.

and they seem to think starvation and bankruptcy will "motivate" people to find work.

You can be as motivated as you want, but if there are no jobs, you're only going to be an unemployed motivated person.

26. Don't know which is the worse of the two
Kyl is against anything that would benefit his consitutents or humanity as a whole.

He doesn't want maternity care in healthcare reform.

He doesn't want the unemployment benefits.

He voted against numerous benefits for the military.

One only has to review Kyl's voting record to see what a worthless piece of crap he is. Kyl is actually afraid to hold townhall forums with his constituents and he relies on his ignorant, teabagging followers to re-elect him. McCain is only slightly better. He has held townhall forums on healthcare reform but he makes sure that they are only done in the red zones. I lost what little respect I had for McCain when he allowed his primate campaign handlers to foist Sarah Palin on our Nation. He may have been a POW and withstood torture, but he did nothing to prevent the circus and torture of his campaign.

I would call them both clowns but they make you laugh. These two make this Arizonan cry.

28. If you read clear to the bottom of the Detroit News article,
you will find this:

If the Senate passes additional benefits -- as is expected -- a House-Senate conference will have to come up with a compromise bill that can pass both chambers. The White House has signaled President Barack Obama's eventual support.

If I read this right, it is expected the Senate will pass this measure anyway. What in the fuck is Kyl trying to do, and why in the fuck is he getting away with it?

42. That's what the Dems need to do.
Somebody asked the former Governor of Louisiana, Edwin Edwards, what he would have done with the Katrina mess. He said he would have called the WH and told them they weren't getting a drop of oil unless major help was on the way immediately.

He may have been corrupt, but he knew how the political system worked. He would have done it too, and somebody should have. It takes a thief, to catch a bastard.

Any headline with his name in it always takes the form "Kyl does {something entirely evil or stupid}". The man pretty much disproves the idea that a stopped clock is right twice a day - he's always wrong.

Edited on Sun Oct-11-09 04:30 AM by IrishBuckeye
One of Jon Kly's request is that the Independent Congressional Budget Office estimate its cost. Is there a cost estimate in the bill? If there wasn't, why wasn't there? If there is, wouldn't it have come from the Independent Congressional Budget Office?

44. I don't know and I don't care.
The measure was going to pass whether there were reports from every government official.

These people had there money cut off immediately. Kyl is keeping a lot of them from money they need to meet basic needs just for the sake of obstruction.

He knew this was on the horizon. If he was so worried he could have asked for his precious reports earlier. The GOP probably got together and decided who would pull this shit.

46. This was a side question, not so much about Kyl's actions.
I do care how much bills cost, I believe in accountability including financial accountability. Bills with services, from military expenditures to social services should include how much they cost. You can question if Congress includes cost of a bill, and support that they all should , and still be for a bills passage. They aren't exclusive of one another.

"Hallelujah, I've freed more people from the shame and disgrace of relying on government handouts! Now they can pull themselves up by their own bootstraps as God intended!"

:puke:

That's the problem with the GOPigs, They expect you to pull up the ol' bootstraps even though there's no bootstraps to pull.
