Where Does Brett Favre Stand on Rush Limbaugh?

http://counterpunch.com/modiano10142009.html

White Silence

-snip-

So now that we have heard sentiments about “black people”, columns from black journalists, and reactions from many current and retired “black NFL players”, a serious question need to be asked:

How did opposition to Rush Limbaugh ownership become exclusively “a black thing”?

Where do “white people” stand on this?

Where are the direct denunciations from white sports writers? (Besides Dave Zirin!). And what do white NFL players think? Do we even know?... Have we even asked? …And if not, why not? ...Are admirable character traits like “community responsibility” and “anti-racism” only to be demanded from African-American athletes?

While this deafening white silence <1> has Howard Cosell howling in his grave, DeMaurice Smith -- the NFL Players Association's Executive Director --is doing their job for them by encouraging NFL players to speak out “with candor and blunt honesty about how they feel." Mr. Smith made no qualifier of the player’s race. Taking Smith's lead, wouldn’t sports writers seek out those voices that carry the greatest influence? There is simply no greater social standing in sports than the great white quarterback, and Donovan McNabb can only nail two of the three criteria. So the question becomes:

What does Brett Favre think?

-snip-

What does Tom Brady think?

-snip-

What does Kurt Warner think?

-snip-

Peyton Manning? Ben Roethlisberger? Tony Romo?

-snip-

It’s an important question worth exploring.

I'm curious to see what is said

6. Jim Irsay
Robert was his dad who died a decade or so ago. Like Limbaugh, Irsay suffered from painkiller addiction years back but he's recovered and has been awesome for Indianapolis. This just makes me like him even more. I bet he spoke for a lot of owners on that topic.

Tom Brady is a democrat who likes to get himself into politics so I'm surprised that he hasn't said anything yet. I don't know if Peyton Manning is a democrat or republican because he has never done anything with politics at all.

After what Goodell said, I highly doubt Limbaugh will get the team. It's a bummer for Checketts because he is a great owner in the NHL and MLS.

4. Warner and (Peyton) Manning are well-known repukes
Warner would probably take a salary cut to go back to his old team.

And why is Tony F'n Romo even included in a discussion of the "great white quarterback"? He, like McNabb, meets only two of the three criteria: in this case, white and a QB. :eyes:

5. He won't care - by the time limpballs takes over the Rams, he will have retired
Maybe two or three times.

7. Well, there's ample room on the stomach -- maybe he should stand there.
In any case, he really should move out of the pocket. ;-)

9. I was wondering about this too.
You would think they would want to show some solidarity with their teammates.

10. What does Brett Favre think? Depends on what day it is
Seriously, though, I don't think many NFL coaches are going to be advising their players to be expressing opinions on something that close to politics.

Which is as it should be, IMO.

So I wouldn't be too surprised not to hear opinions on this from any of them. I think many of them have too much class to get involved in mud-slinging of any sort.

11. Truthfully, I haven't seen many comments from active football players
Edited on Wed Oct-14-09 01:36 PM by Mike Daniels
I've seen the same handful of names in each article that comes out.

For that matter, why hasn't Rooney (Steelers) spoken out since he helped guarantee that minority candidates be interviewed for coaching positions? Maybe it's because he got too political during the Super Bowl victory speech by thanking Obama. After all, what the hell does Barack have to do with a team winning the Super Bowl? I can say the same for those who thank "God" in their victory speech but I don't know if that's as controversial as thanking a president.

As another poster indicated I imagine that most players (black and white) and coaches have been quiet by design. For all the talk about not playing for the Rams or traveling to St. Louis I doubt you'll see many players give up their multi-million dollar a year contracts (esp. if they're on a different team) because Limbaugh becomes a minority partner of a football team. And that's exactly what Limbaugh will be (minority partner). For all his self-proclaimed "knowledge" would you trust Rush with any decision involving talent beyond what hot dog concession to hire?

Michael Jordan once defined his reluctance to get political with "Republicans buy shoes too" and I'm sure that's how many of the athletes that have endorsements or advertising $ contributing to their annual income are looking at it for the short term.

Simply, this is the owners' call and they're the ones that will ultimately decide whether Rush gets to claim an owner's box or not.

12. According to ESPN, Bret Favor is the ONLY football player that matters...
...so I guess it's only his opinion that matters.

For those of you who don't understand this, watch ESPN for a few minutes and see the Favor-worshipping...it's enough to make you swear off all sports!!!!!!
