Youths sought after dog set on fire in North Richmond

NORTH RICHMOND — Authorities are seeking the public's help in tracking down a group of boys suspected of setting fire to a pit bull that later had to be euthanized because of its injuries, the Contra Costa County Animal Services Department said.

The dog died two weeks ago, and investigators have exhausted leads into who might have injured the animal, said Sgt. Cedric Williams-Kane. On the evening of Oct. 14, a resident near the intersection of West Grove Avenue and Opal Court called sheriff's dispatchers and said a dog had been set on fire by a group of about six boys.

When authorities went to the area, the dog was gone. That was followed by a call from a resident in the 1300 block of York Street saying she had just found a black-and-white pit bull in her backyard, bleeding and showing burn marks, Williams-Kane said.

Animal services officers took custody of the pit bull, a female believed to be between 6 and 8 months old, but had to euthanize the animal because of the severity of the injuries, Williams-Kane said.
