After I told the Gunny Sergeant what he could do with that idea (I was still young and reckless then) I found myself on 30 days mess duty.

My luck was not having enough seniority for small boat school in '65. Of the 9 picked from my ship, 7 were casualties within 6 Months. Riverine Patrol.

185. Way back then all MOSs over 900 were classified

But that was a long time ago when there was a very bad entity (so we were told) called the "Soviet Union." At the time there were no spy satellites, no internet, no nothing of what there is today.

So we relied on you Ditty-Boppers to alert us when the Soviets were about to test one of their ICBNs. They would launch from South Central Asia (one of the 'stans) and the impact range was Kamchatka. We would monitor the pre-launch, the launch, the trajectory and the impact 5,000 miles away. The Soviet ICBMs, btw, were VERY accurate.

That is what 982.10-me in my section did at the Puzzle Palace.

Thanks for the info on the books, bookmarking links and titles and will check them out. (Read the first Bamford book but not "Body of Secrets."

Soldiers and WACS
The WACS who dressed in slacks
Dancing cheek to cheek and backs to backs

There's a lot to be said for the Army
A gal was never lost for company

A million handsome guys
With longing in their eyes
And all you had to do was pick the age, the weight, the size
Oh, gee, I wish I was back in the Army

aboard at the time were VA 46 and 72, and they had A4 acft. McCain was attached to VA46. Those two squadrons transitioned to A7 acft later that year as I recall.

edited to add the following details, which I find interesting. The last job I had in the USN was maintenance chief in this squadron (1987 - 88)- what I consider to be the high point of my career.

I wasn't sure about some of the dates of transition when I made the response earlier, so did a little research.

<snip of a portion of squadron history VA 46>
July 29, 1967:
While aircraft were being prepared for the second launch of the day against targets in Vietnam, a fire broke out on the flight deck of United States Ship Forrestal CVA 59. Flames engulfed the fantail and spread below decks touching off bombs and ammunition. Heroic efforts by VA-46 personnel, along with other members of CVW-17 and ship's company, brought the fires under control. Damage to the carrier and aircraft was severe and the casualties included 132 dead, two missing and presumed dead and 62 injured. LCDR Fred White, in the aircraft that was struck by a Zuni rocket, was one of those killed.

A total of eleven A-4E Skyhawks were lost in the fire. Those lost by VA46 were: 149996 (AA416), 150064 (AA405), 150068 (AA407), 150084 (AA410), 150115 (AA412), 150118 (AA414) and 150129 (AA417).
Other Skyhawks lost were: BuNo. 152018, BuNo. 152024, BuNo. 152036, and BuNo. 152040.
A-4B BuNo. 144997 was destroyed in 1968 when LT. Dave Dollarhide ejected following an engine failure. The "Clansmen" were flying A-Bs due to the loss of their "E"s in the Forrestal Fire.
May 4 through November 15, 1968:
VA-46 transitioned to the Vought A-7B Corsair II.

we had four days off each cycle. The base had a couple of campers on pickups that we could check out, so we used to travel all over Turkey in those things. Oddly, very few people on the base had any interest, so my friends and I took off every cycle for four days. We saw a lot of Turkey.

160. Long ago, Euphesus was a major port on the Med.
The place where Mary ascended is close by.

http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Ephesus

House of the Virgin Mary.

Ephesus and Christianity

Ephesus was an important center for Early Christianity from the AD 50s. From AD 52-54, Paul lived here, working with the congregation and apparently organizing missionary activity into the hinterlands.<22> He became embroiled in a dispute with artisans, whose livelihood depended on selling the statuettes of Artemis in the Temple of Artemis (Acts 19:23–41). He wrote between 53 and 57 AD the letter 1 Corinthians from Ephesus (possibly from the "Paul tower" close to the harbour, where he was imprisoned for a short time). Later Paul wrote to the Christian community at Ephesus, while he was in prison in Rome (around 62 AD)

Anatolia was associated with John,<23> one of the chief apostles, and the Gospel of John might have been written in Ephesus, c 90-100.<24> Ephesus was one of the seven cities addressed in Revelation (2:1–7), indicating that the church at Ephesus was still strong.

Two decades later, the church at Ephesus there was still important enough to be addressed by a letter written by Bishop Ignatius of Antioch to the Ephesians in the early 2nd century AD, that begins with, "Ignatius, who is also called Theophorus, to the Church which is at Ephesus, in Asia, deservedly most happy, being blessed in the greatness and fullness of God the Father, and predestinated before the beginning of time, that it should be always for an enduring and unchangeable glory" (Letter to the Ephesians). The church at Ephesus had given their support for Ignatius, who was taken to Rome for execution.

The house of the Virgin Mary, about 7 km (4 mi) from Selçuk, is believed to have been the last home of Mary, mother of Jesus. It is a popular place of pilgrimage which has been visited by three recent popes.

The Church of Mary close to the harbor of Ephesus was the setting for the Third Ecumenical Council in 431, which resulted in the condemnation of Nestorius. A Second Council of Ephesus was held in 449, but its controversial acts were never approved by the Catholics. It came to be called the Robber Council of Ephesus or Robber Synod of Latrocinium by its opponents.

118. It was interesting. At the small post where I was stationed, I'd guess
that over 60% of the people based there never went beyond the base gates more than a couple of times. The rest of us took the opportunity that was there and explored. Some more than others. There were only a few, though, who ranged out more than a few miles. A lot of the guys were afraid of the Turks, but I found them friendly and curious about the United States, especially if you bothered to learn a bit of the language.

A lot of American military personnel are pretty insular when stationed overseas. It's a strange thing to me, but it's certainly true.

Turkey was great as a place to be stationed. Very different from anywhere I had been as a 21 year old kid in the late 60s. Fascinating.

Wouldn't trade it for the world and think about it all the time. Training that got me into Ford Motor Co- without connections! Happy Veterans Day all! :toast: :bounce:

66. Strange cirumstances
I got sent Afghanistan shortly after 9/11. However, before my MOS got stop-lossed, I hit ETS (well, I had about 50 days terminal leave saved up, so they let me go back to Korea where I had been before 9/11 and outprocess). I got a call from my supervisor while I was on terminal leave telling me I might have to come back to Korea as we had just been stop-lossed but from what I heard, the final ruling was that if house-hold goods had already been shipped they were going to let us go ahead and ETS.

I was out for about 15 months in IRR and got my recall paperwork, so I ended up going back for a year anyway, just had 15 months to get out of shape before hand...hehe.

Naval Base, Adak Island, Alaska 69-70

True story - I was sworn into the Navy at the recruiters office one morning, walked back to my apartment, checked my mail, and there was my draft notice. Turned straight around, took it to the recruiter and he said he would notify the Army they were a bit late. I knew it was coming, but the same day? LOL

134. I Got My Draft Notice
the last week of navy boot camp. I took it to the draft board
the week after that (in uniform), threw it down on the main desk
and told them they were too late. The guy looked at it, up at me
and then yelled at me to "get out".

131. 1984 to 1987 Army 9th Infantry Division.
Don't have many pictures, but, I do have these few on hand.

I joined when I was just 17yrs old. Did my boot camp at Fort Benning Georgia and the remainder at Fort Lewis 9th Infantry division. 2nd of the 2nd was the only light infantry on Lewis, except of course for the 2nd of the 75th Ranger Battalion.

Here's a few pics:

Just me holding my roommate's 90mm recoilless. Fort Lewis 1986.

Me (left) and a friend outside our bootcamp barracks. Fort Benning 1984.

View from my barracks window. Washington does have some nice scenery. Fort Lewis 1985.

Remember riding in these cattle cars? Me at Fort Benning (bootcamp) 1984.

Peace,
Xicano

182. I would normally stipulate to that quite willingly! However,...
we had what they said was the coldest winter in 40-something years (maybe they always say that). :D

It rained during some portion of every day, except for 3 or 4, and it actually SNOWED (lightly) twice.

Funny thing about the Army (as you well know), oddly enough, rain doesn't seem to effect the training schedule... ;)

B/5/3 "Pride of the Infantry" or some such nonsense... :D
