Michigan Rental Homes Needed For Tennessee GM Transplants
With potentially even more people moving up from TN to MI, realtors are looking for homes that can be rented

While most people are relaxing this holiday week, hundreds of GM workers from Spring Hill, TN, are busy getting ready to uproot their lives and move to Michigan.

"They're very stressed about having to make the move. They thought they'd have more time," says Keller Williams Realtor Kim Lundberg.

Lundberg went down to the GM relocation fair in Spring Hill last week. There she found hundreds of people telling her they need housing immediately; some start work as early as January 11.

"Almost all of them need rentals. Some longer than others, but they are all looking to get up here and get something to rent," she says.

All these potential renters isn't just good news for apartment complexes. It could also be a great opportunity for those having trouble selling their homes, Lundberg says.

"We're looking for anyone who has a home on the market that's empty and are willing to rent short-term or long-term," she says.

1. I did it during the
...recession of the early 90s. It wasn't so bad. Just suck it up and move. This time there are plenty of places available; they should be able to find a pretty decent place.

2. Ironic. They left Michigan in the 80s
because labor was cheaper in the south where there was less unionization, and now the southerners are going to go up to Michigan and take the jobs that ought to be going to the unemployed auto workers. Brilliant country.

7. Ah, good point.
"Move to MI or lose your job" being the ultimatum.

The first one, on Maryland, is within 3 blocks of my sister's house

P.S. The ones that mention they are near "The Village" is a nice area. Elementary school right there as well as shops, doctors and dentist offices and a hospital. Also near the river where people like to jog/walk or ride their bikes.

4. Shouldn't be a problem

Michigan real estate is hardly booming in most places so plenty of available inventory. When I was looking at a potential move there this summer I was however surprised by the property taxes, which approached if not met NYS levels in some areas. I was looking around Lansing/EL so may not be the same everywhere, but typically intrastate variation is not massive. Property taxes there at least and possibly all over MI are recalculated based on sale price every time a house is sold, so you can easily be surprised if not careful by some 20+ year resident telling you he pays $900 in property taxes, then finding out you'll have to pay $5000.

As far as moving goes sure it's a hassle but since I'm in my fifth state in seven years I'm proof positive it's certainly doable.

8. Is this a f@cking joke? There aren't any qualified people IN Michigan to fill these postions?
We have 50% unemployment in parts of this state and GM is moving folks from fucking Tennessee?

That makes sense.

9. So other GM employees have no right to stay employed?
There is nothing magical about a state border that says jobs must go to current residents. Especially when the transplants are current employees of the same company. Should any company that moves plants start their workforce from scratch just to hire "locals"?

11. I work for a Fortune 100 company
There was a hiring freeze, after a contract was dropped by the US government, so that employees from one area could be transferred to other locations. Better to retain the same people if they're willing to move, than have even worse layoffs.

12. We've been taking it on the chin for 30 years. GM could have given the state a break and
saved itself some employee relocation costs and Michiganders aren't just "locals" when it comes to the auto industry. It's not like GM was moving the plant to some isolated Pacific Island were the labor market had never seen an auto factory before.
