Poll question: How progressive are you? What is your score on the American Progress Quiz?
Edited on Tue Dec-29-09 02:46 PM by andym
Take the American Progress quiz (thanks to Clio the Leo for the link) and report your score below.
http://www.americanprogress.org/issues/2009/03/progressive_quiz.html

Let's see how progressive DU really is....

For reference (American Progress' partial results from a poll conducted earlier this year)
mean scores (by self-identification):
Progressives 237.6
Democrats 237.7
Liberals 242.3
2008 Obams voters 244.0
Liberal Democrats 247.1

I would be very interested to know the standard deviations or variance.

For those interested their full report is here:

certainly some of the questions are problematic.

But it's interesting how well the progressive scores (close to 400) correlated with some of the most strongly opinionated Du'ers who I suspect consider themselves as the most progressive members here.

The question that confused me was the one about corporations' responsibility. The fact is that their main legal purpose is to enrich their shareholders, so I answered higher for that, but I think that they should go back to being chartered by the government with the purpose being to improve their community as well as protecting shareholders.

109. No, that is what organized crime is for
Corporations have to act in accordance with their articles of incorporation. Unfortunately, anything legal is allowed to be in those articles, unlike the days when corporate charters were for limited periods of time for limited areas of business and were closely scrutinized.

127. I was too hasty in my characterization of corporations.
Some corporations are more ethical than others, even now that regulations have been stripped away.

But, I still think the questionnaire item needs to be worded differently.

companies should set out to make money. The damn gummint should make sure they don't do so by shitting in the stream and killing our children and the rest of the natural world with poison toys. Of course that requires a non corrupt system. Which would be the problem we are confronted with right now.

Of course on DU I'm the favorite name of the week by people who call themselves 'progressive'.

Since progressives should be accepting of others by nature, those who like to categorize and name-call (to suppress opinions they don't like) are surely political, but NOT progressive.

24. They are confusing progressive with liberal.
They also had a few compound questions in there. They had one question that was literally a question of fact, but was implicitly a question of preference. It was essentially do you think corporations' responsibility is to make money and not solve social problems. That is their responsibility. Now, if it were up to me, that would not be the case. But it isn't up to me, so it is the case.

248. I thought that was an interesting question, as well...
I do believe that the legal purpose of a corporation is to make money for its shareholders -- they're not a public charity. It's the purpose of government to ensure that corporations operate in a lawful and ethical manner. It's a Yin/Yan thing that doesn't necessarily make one liberal or conservative.

It's the government's degree of regulation on those corporations that defines whether one is a liberal or a conservative -- and there was a question on that subject.

369 - "Extremely Progressive" according to them
But then the "Center for American Progress" was founded by Clintonite DLC'ers, so I'm not at all surprised they would consider me "extreme".

I really find it hard to believe the "average" score is 209.

How did you respond to that? I'd say that it proves a lot of things and imposing democracy would be about the bottom of my list. lol

Ditto for the government spending question "Government spending is nearly always wasteful" or something to that effect.

More of a measure of Pavlovian response than position on issues, IMO.

I did that once on a religious quiz that showed me to be liberal protestant and not very Catholic. I took it again answering "what would the Pope say" and scored 100% Catholic.

110. dang, I missed one
I took it again and got 10 out of 400. I know what conservatives think, except on one issue. Are they anti-free trade?

I was surprised, when I took it, how many zeroes and tens I responded with. Usually I will shy away from an absolute answer and only answer with 1,2, or 8,9 instead of zero and ten. Something about the way the statements were worded, probably 20 out of 40 of my answers were zero or ten.

But are there really people who would score below 40 in the same way that some DUers are scoring about 360? That still seems kinda extremist to me, even though I was extremist myself on about half of them. It seems to me there were lots more questions on economic issues versus social issues.

112. 263 - very progressive - some of the questions were actually little or no option in spite...
of the 5pt spread either way; which is able to create high numbers simply by bouncing back & forth like a ping-pong ball and not peering into where learned nuance or witnessed may contribute to less knee jerk results i.e. what was it again - paraphrasing I am sure: "Do you think America should make sure the rest of the world is educated?" Well...

There's a feel good moment. So while it feels great to think that way, we're having a hell of a time educating ourselves. So to be honest, one would do well to spread that response out cause you can't log a '5', a '5' is like 'a push'. It's indifferent. Mine was '3' = I agree that America should be able to, I disagree that American even can, etc

But it was fun and that's the main thing

129. the class of the questions - it's heavily about the economy
by my count

economic issues - 20 questions
international issues - 9
social issues - 8
envrionmental - 3

If people were giving weight to the answer as well as agreement, then people might tilt more conservative. That is, "human life begins at conception and must be protected"

and people would answer 0 - 10 in disagreemnt to agreement, but also give a weight of 1-5 of "how important is this issue in deciding your vote"

What they might find is that there is a fair amount of agreement between the two sides, but the agreement is on issues that neither side really cares about. Like "minimum wage, yawn, sure, why not?" or "I am against it, but not that upset if it happens" or "I am for it, but not worried if it doesn't happen". Whereas larger groups of people get more excited/angry about other hot button issues.

145. There were three or four questions which were oddly framed . . .
can't remember which ones --

Oh, one had to do with government regulating sex and violence in culture/TV?

Was that it --

Well, yes -- I do think there is too much violence -- from kids programs to movies.

But I think influencing a downturn in violence is one thing -- regulating it another --=

SEX? I think abusive sex -- and abusive views of females is a problem --

Internet porn is certainly a problem -- for those who use and abuse it -- and for those

who find it intruding on our lives! The other day -- and I'm having a problem with my

computer with a virus of some kind -- I was looking for an article from PROBE magazine.

You can guess what happened!!

Also, we once had Comcast as an internet carrier -- they make $500 million a year from

internet porn -- fortuntely, we weren't planning to use a Comcast e-mail address because

the e-mail boxes were always full of porn!! Just coincidentally!

Anyone remember any other odd questions?

And, who actually thought up this crap?

I didn't like that sex and violence were lumped together. I am generally anti-censorship but I wouldn't mind some actions being taken regarding violence. As far as sex goes, I don't have a problem with pornography aside from that fact that I believe the age minimum for sex industry workers should be raised.

ok... I filled out something similar to this with similar results. I'm a red flag waving communist-pinko tree-hugging, frickin' liberal...lol

Keep in mind as to who funded this study. DLCers have a very warped view of what Progressive actually means. According to this poll, the average score is 209.5.... dude man, I'm fringe! The survey proves it!!!! Lol...
