Brown is a right wing douchebag and I'm not going to vote for him under any circumstances and there is no fucking way I'm staying home.

I am going to vote for Coakley.

She may not be the perfect candidate but there's no way in hell I'd let a puke get Ted Kennedy's seat. I'm voting on Tues and I sincerely hope Massdems rally around her.

He voted against benefits to 9/11 Red Cross workers on a slam dunk bill--JUST TO MAKE A POINT.

Coakley had the name recognition from her televised trials and such, which I really think gave her the nomination, but people aren't gaga over her.

Of course I would vote for her over that pig she is up against, but I really can see your point about the DLC wanting to lose the magic 60.

69. She got bad advice at the end of the primaries. They misjudged Scott Brown's greasiness
and sat on a 30+ point lead rather than campaigning ten points down.

I met Martha Coakley, and I have to say--she doesn't come across anything like her ads. She's smart, warm, sincere, and she showed a little fire for the first time in her campaign last night.

Just had an argument with my brother in law about Coakley and baseball! I asked him if her knowledge of baseball mattered to the health of this country - figuratively and literally. I'll be glad when we WIN Tuesday and we can get along with the business of actually making our lives better. Wish I could move to Mass. just to vote in this election.

49. That bullshit should be locked and/or deleted
Rules of DU clearly state that we are not to campaign against a democrat running for office nor suggest not voting.

And ESPECIALLY for those who don't live in Massachusetts, if you aren't going to help keep Ted Kennedy's seat blue then perhaps just keep your mouth shut. I don't know about you, but I wouldn't not be happy about people suggesting it would be ok if I got stuck with a right-wing nut job for my senator. I had Rick Santorum for 8 years thank you very much. I'm in Delaware now and well, I have Tom Carper. I'd be happy to help support a primary candidate against him (although I doubt that we'll have one since we have 2 senate races this year). But I do know this - even on Tom Carpers absolutely horrible worst day ever he was still 1000000000000% better than Rick Santorum on his absolute best days.

50. Brown's election might result in a better health care bill
If Brown wins the Senate will be forced to use the reconciliation process. Only needing 51 votes will allow the Senate bill to move closer to the House bill. If Coakly is elected by a slim margin the moderate Dems will run scared and shift or stay close to center.

Only needing 51 votes in the Senate strips Lieberman, the Nelsons, Lincoln, Bayh and other's on the fence of their power.

In a strange way it might be Kennedy's final gift to Health care.

51. The latest smear campaign...
Dorothy Rabinowitz has an article in the WSJ regarding Martha Coakley's part in the prosecution of the Amirault family (Fells Acre Day Care) back in the mid 1980s.

The charges against the family were absurd, yet three members of the family were convicted.

I do remember that case. My own family was going through something similar (a BIL accused of molesting my daughter and some other little girls) so it took on a special significance.

Some years later, the then governer, Jane Swift, was called upon to commute the sentences of the family based on the really bad evidence. She refused. But the surviving members of the family were finally released from prison.

So now, here I am, years later, feeling like, geez...these people were probably not even guilty of the heinous crimes of which they were accused, and Martha Coakley was key in putting them in prison.

BUT...

OTOH, she was doing her job.

She's a bulldog.

Exactly what we need in the Senate.

I'll still vote for her.

55. LEts get the bulldog after you then,
Martha Coakley was key in putting them in prison, if she had used her head or heart, she would have realized she was wrong. It may be a smear to you since you don't like to think much, but it can easily be someone else next time, and now this monster is going to be making laws. How nice, the HCR bill is still going to be nonreforming, but lets add someone who won't look twice at putting innocent people in jail, lovely.

63. Sorry, but I don't think someone should be smeared just for
doing his/her job.

Were OJ Simpson's legal team a similar bunch of "monsters" for getting him off his murder charges?

They merely did the job they were hired to do.

Sorry you don't like it, but that's the way the legal system works in this country. People often have to put aside what's in their "hearts and heads" and just DO THEIR JOBS.

I don't like that the Amirault family were probably false prosecuted and convicted, but it was their lawyers' job to MAKE the state prove their guilt.

And they failed.

By the same token, it was up to the prosecution in the OJ to prove his guilt. And the prosecution failed.

So, in your world, people who do their jobs are "monsters"?

That's a pretty rigid, black-and-white mindset. Black and white. Right or wrong. No shades of gray to muddle up the emotional reaction. Doesn't take a rocket scientist to flip a coin, does it...

81. That's a pretty rigid way to not apply common sense.
If she was doing her job, those people wouldn't have gone to jail, it's called discretion, or taking a moment to think about what you are doing. If nothing, her actions prove she's an opportunist for any fear mongering that may be going around.

Please, I'm not from Mass. so don't worry, but i wouldn't vote for the D or R, probably the 3rd party guy would get my vote. In a perfect world, she wouldn't have made it past the primary, but if it boils down to the lesser of two evils than Obama is going to have to man up, and ignore those trying to use this as a referendum. Which is absurd.

90. what?

She was a prosecutor.

do you know what a prosecutor does? A prosecutor attempts to prove someone committed a crime. She did her job, and very unfortunately the Amiraults' defense attorneys didn't. I feel for them, I really do. But Martha Coakley did her job.

Oh, and nobody who enters politics on any level survives very long without being an opportunist.

Politics is NOT a warm and fuzzy trip to Candyland complete with cute little bunnies and sparkly rainbows. It's not nursery school. It's not a pajama party.

It's very often pretty cutthroat and nasty.

Nice guys finish last.

64. I dearly want them to eat their own words when announcing Sen. Coakley is going to Washington
The Republicans will say they won in any case, as they forced even Obama to get involved. OK, so they did.
They can crow all they want for all I care, as long as they don't have that Senate seat.

71. Honestly this all started when Politico (right-wing blog) reported that the race was almost tie
Edited on Sat Jan-16-10 03:00 PM by LynneSin
It takes something as stupid as that to create the seeds of disinformation and discouragement.

God forbid he pulls this off, it's a Class I senate seat which means re-election in 2 years

62. Good for you!
There will be plenty of time to deal with the legitimate gripes of lefties later, without handing right-wingers a victory and ourselves a horrid setback by losing the Massachusetts Senate race. Go, Coakley!

65. There is an all out media effort to defeat her. Try googling her name,
all you get is Boston Herald BS and RW crape under her name. What an incredible effort to make it look bad for her. Wow.
And, all for this for POS Brown who really offers nothing to the people of Massachusetts. I hope every Dem gets out and votes and for Coakley. This would be a big slap in the face for the media who is playing games and for the wacky teabaggers who think they are the majority in this country. And, a a Democratic landslide would be the best thing for Massachusetts and our country.

Edited on Sat Jan-16-10 02:52 PM by joeunderdog
What a fucken right-wing whack job. Usually they try to hide that in Mass. But he comes out like a pro-gun, pro-war, no-tax/gov-hating condescending prick--on his own commercials. Scary dude. A vote for Martha is a vote against another silver spoon extremest who thinks he knows how to rule the world. Coakley's shortcomings pale in comparison to this guy's self-proclaimed "strengths."

91. Plus he comes off as a whiny ass little second-grader
When he claims that Coakley (the big bad mean lady) is running negative attack ads against him, which he claims are "wrong", but he fails to tell us just what IS "wrong" about what's being said about him.

72. THANK YOU - REALITY ROCKS !!!
If I could vote for her I would, but I contributed to ActBlue.

It's encouraging to see people who realize that even if she wasn't their favorite Democrat in the primary, that it's WRONG to sit out the election. There's always going to be certain issues that you disagree with them about, but in an election you have to decide which of two candidates would better represent you (and it sure the hell ain't Brown).

NOW GO VOTE !!!!

Taking a chance that a douchebag like Brown will end up with the seat because your preferred candidate is not in the race is a pretty stupid idea.

89. Hey, that's what happened in Virginia Gov's race. And now we have one first class kool-aid drinker.
Edited on Sat Jan-16-10 06:33 PM by ShortnFiery
Truth is, if the candidate is "the same corporate sell out" then does it really matter that they may be less right wing on social matters?

If we're slouching toward fascism, then IMO, it might as well be under the GOP vice the DLC.

However, I did shag my butt to the polls to vote for the Blue Dog, corporate sell out "Deeds" because he was a democrat and less right wing crazy on social issues.

Call me a hopeless romantic for what the Democratic Party should stand for? :(

92. Me too!
As another poster said, some people in the Coakley camp underestimated Brown's "greasiness" (so accurate a description) and allowed him to make this a close contest. You can rest assured that I will be filling in the oval for Coakley on Tuesday (although I voted for Capuano in the primaries).

95. Brown is what you say he is, and may Massachusetts Democrats and
others turn out in large percentages at the polls on Tuesday.

By lunch that day I hope Democratic chair people can tell the media that turnout is running high, with good energy and visible support for Coakley.

A Kennedy or two held this seat for a long, long time. It would be a holy shame to turn it over to a right-wing jerk like Scott Brown.
