A Death in the Congressman's Office (Joe Scarborough)
Does Anybody in the Press Care About Lori Klausutis?
By Denis Wright and Chris George

August 8, 2001 (APJP)

In reality, there is indeed a news story percolating out there. The story bears remarkable and ironic similarities to the Condit/Levy story. Both involve Congressmen, rumors of infidelity, and the fate of a younger female subordinate. The details are so similar as to remind one of two alternate universes. The difference between the two stories? First, in the Klausutis case as not in the Levy case, there is a real body, very dead. Second, the Klausutis case involves a Republican.

The story had a brief flutter in the Northwest Florida press, which ran a few very short stories on Lori's death. With the exception of the Northwest Florida Daily News, they were of the "Aw-what-a-shame/ nothing-to-see-here-move-along-now-folks" variety. But nationally, this mysterious death earned a mere one paragraph mention in The Washington Post's NATION IN BRIEF column:

"FORT WALTON BEACH, FL. - Lori Klausutis, a 28-year-old office worker for Rep. Joe Scarborough (R-Fl), was found dead in the congressman's district office. Police said preliminary findings from the medical examiner's office showed no foul play or any outward indication of suicide."

Unbelievably, that was it. The story was simply dropped. A young female employee of one of Florida's Congressmen had died unexpectedly in the Congressman's office. There were no witnesses to her death and the cause of death was not apparent. Klausutis' boss, Joe Scarborough had recently resigned from Congress prematurely and unexpectedly, amid rumors about his marital fidelity and soon after a divorce. He had also abruptly resigned as publisher of the Independent Florida Sun, claiming that resigning from Congress and as publisher was necessary to spend more time with his sons.

Such circumstances make one pause. Sick to death of the clear bias of the corporate owned media, and suspicious of the odd nature of this death, we began to dig for answers. The more information we discovered, the more unlikely, and the more newsworthy the story became.

Here are the facts. Lori Klausutis had a seemingly happy life. A devoted husband who listed on his online homepage "being married to Lori" as one of the honors he enjoyed, a new home in Niceville and a Catholic congregation where she was a cantor and in whose choir she sang, were some of the elements of the Good Life she enjoyed. Her husband, Dr. Timothy Klausutis, did research and development for the munitions group at nearby Eglin Air Force Base, where he presumably made a good livelihood. Although Lori hailed from the Atlanta, Georgia area where she had attended school, there were numerous family members in the area. According to her obituary in the Fort Walton Daily News, Lori had served as President and, later, Treasurer, for the Emerald Coast Young Republicans and as a aide to Congressman Scarborough, she was active during the Florida recounts. A former neighbor, Barbara Cromer, said "Every morning, I would see her run while I walked. We'd wave to each other as we passed. I loved Lori so much. She was wonderful. She was a kind, generous person, so sweet.

With Joe Scarborough as a "credible" media type now and a possible 2012 Presidental candidate, do you think any of these questions are going to be addressed at some point.

Also thought this might be interesting to the Morning Joe fans on the board, even if it is from 2001.

1. This has been discussed here many times.
Odd too that Scarborough resigned so abruptly and unexpectedly.

There's more to this story than we know. Joey is a real piece of crap, IMO. And his doll Mika is just as bad. She should just sit in his lap during the show. :puke:

2. I know it has been discussed here before
I personally didn't know some of the stuff in this article, and just thought maybe someone else didnt as well. Especially some on DU who watch this guy every day. That this guy is being taken seriously as a 2012 candidate for President and he has this stuff hanging over his head is pretty unbelievable.

4. The Dr sounded shady..I dont think he can shake the dead intern story off enough to run

Dr. Michael Berkland, who found inconclusive results after performing the Klausutis autopsy, had recently relocated to Florida; and public reports reveal that Berkland's medical license in the state of Missouri was revoked in 1998 as a result of Berkland reporting false information regarding brain tissue samples in a 1996 autopsy report—charges that Berkland does not deny...

Who would be the first lady candidate?

5. Here
The Plausible: Why not Joe Scarborough, the former Florida congressman, author, and entertaining host of MSNBC’s Morning Joe? Scarborough is telegenic, has a quick wit, legislative experience, and may have the most important factor of all, though he won’t admit it. Yet. He may have the “want it” factor.

Scarborough could be a strong candidate against Obama. He’s a terrific communicator. He’s media savvy. He has strong conservative credentials especially on fiscal and foreign-policy issues—strong enough to satisfy the base in a general election. But he has evolved and moderated his views on issues important to centrists and independents, such as the environment, immigration, and human rights. He reminds me a bit of George Allen, but more moderate, cosmopolitan, and heterodox. And boy, does the Republican Party need more heterodox. Plus he’s young, 46, iconoclastic, unpredictable, a reformer, plays guitar, and dropped the F-bomb on TV, so he can attract younger voters.

Scarborough left Congress five months into his fourth term because he wanted to spend more time with his children, saying that he’d rather be judged as being a good father than a good politician. And for that alone, he shows he has his priorities in place and deserves some credit and consideration. But now the kids are older, so...

With Palin, Huckabee, Santorum, Gingrich, and others likely stampeding to capture the far right of the Republican primary, there’s a big opening for an attractive moderate. Like someone who’s bringing the morning coffee and driving the political gabfest every day on MSNBC.

10. There's no foul play
I don't see why this is a scandal. People drop dead all over the place. Whose fault is that?

15. it's not a scandal. you are right
it's this simple. it is very difficult to kill a healthy young woman and not leave signs of foul play.

VERY difficult. i've done many death investigations, and seen many homicide scenes.

police can ask the guy questions,as they did, but that's about as far as it can go.

no signs of foul play means no justification for any kind of search warrant, etc.

you've got an apparently healthy woman found dead.

18. She didn't just "drop dead" -- she had a large skull fracture, with a contra-coup bleed on the other
side of her skull. Such a bleed doesn't occur unless pretty massive force has been applied to the skull --- not something you can do yourself by "fainting" or "having a seizure" and having your head hit a desk on the way down.
Very, very, VERY fishy story.

20. I agree with you
Scarborough may be a blowhard, but a murderer?

Sorry, I just don't see it and I also don't see him running for President, or the Senate, or anything else.

To me this "scandal" holds about as much merit as "The Clinton Dead list" and IMO the GOP who are actually IN OFFICE provide plenty of actual crimes to investigate. I don't think I need to devote my time to what happened to Scarborough's intern nine years ago...Just my 2 cents!

inquiring minds want to know. Isn't this more important than a cigar.

14. In some of the reports before the story got killed
it was stated that the couple who arrived for an appointment had said it was with Scarbrough. And that the visit to DC (where he was supposed to be notified of the death) was a spur of the moment thing about some pressing issues. No body in DC was privy to the meeting he was supposed to have gone to. At night. Early in the morning. I could never figure that one out. He took a private plane late the previous night to DC to get there for his mysterious meeting. No body bothered to notify the couple Scarbrough had canceled.

24. Joe Scarborough never seems to mention Mrs. Klausutis.
It's odd no one seems to ask Scarborough about her.

Joe Scarborough and Corporate McPravda want you to forget Lori Klausutis

Thank you for remembering Lori, spiritual_gunfighter.
