Obama Will Meet With Republicans Next Week On Health Care:
Why is Obama still trying to woo these idiots?

President Obama said on Sunday that he will hold a meeting with Republican lawmakers next week, to be followed by a meeting with members of both parties, in an effort to get health care reform legislation back on track.

"What I have been doing is consulting closely with the leaders in the House, the leaders in the Senate on the Democratic side," the president said in a pre-Super Bowl interview with CBS's Katie Couric. "And I want to consult closely with our Republican colleagues. So they are going to be coming into the White House next week. And what I want to do is to ask them to put their ideas on the table. And then after the recess which will be a few weeks, I want to come back and have a large meeting -- Republicans and Democrats -- and go through systematically all the best ideas that are out there and move it forward." ... http://news.yahoo.com/s/huffpost/20100207/cm_huffpost/452790

34. I find it interesting that...
...from a few of the replies, not necessarily the one you're replying to, indicate something interesting.

After all that (appropriate) bashing of Bush for refusing to engage Iran, for example, Obama is now supposed to refuse to engage the Republicans.

As if playing 7th grade "I'm not talking to her" social games would "Sure show them", and actually lead to reform.

2. Well, if the congressional republicans take their advice from Freeperland...
...they won't show up. That would just give Obama more opportunity to show them for who they really are and who they really represent.

thoroughly repudiated him as do the GOPers, perhaps Obama would woo us??

NAH. Taken purely for granted, again.

10 bucks says they won't take it.

We need to pummel them for their obstructionism - all the way up to November and beyond.

Edited on Mon Feb-08-10 11:01 AM by JCMach1
One of the worst is (like Bush) he refuses to change his mind when he is wrong.

Bipartisanship is just another word for caving to the Repugs in this climate.

22. He should get another book . . .
maybe Conservatives without Conscience by John Dean or Blinded by the Right by David Brock. These are not statesmen, these are snakes. Obama's got to get his mongoose on.

Kill the snake. If the problem persists, it's time to kill the snake. You can hit it with a shovel, chop it up with a knife (messy) or find some other way of killing it. Make sure it's dead, because it might not be if you're not careful.

12. I see some people think it would be smarter to NOT meet with them. FFS. How Bush-like.
Seriously, wasn't it Bush who refused to interact with Iran and others?

And didn't we think that approach was unproductive?

Does anyone really thing we should not interact with elected representatives of all fifty states?

Did you miss the last meeting with the GOP, and the questions and answers?

Have you ever been involved in conflict resolution, where interaction between the opposing parties is essential?

If you think we can thumb our nose at them and bully our way through legislation...

...then you haven't been paying attention.

:wtf:

The Repugs are not going to shift their positions.

18. i disagree... republiCONS understand only one thing, or haven't you been paying attention...
Edited on Mon Feb-08-10 11:24 AM by thotzRthingz
they are not interested in cooperating, so long as they KNOW that DEMS will bow to their every wish (after all, they have the 41 vote majority on the Senate).

What will it take to destruct their LOCK-STEP PARTY OF NO ANTICS?

It will only take ONE HUGE NUKE (ala forcing a 51 vote majority on HCR), from REID... and they'll start adding another word ("YES") to their vocabulary. Every time I hear/see one of these republiCONS (especially Mitch McConnell) foaming at the mouth with LIE after LIE and "no after no" ... I want to NUKE them myself!

21. Meeting with them has value to mainstream voters, gives the appearance of cooperation and...
...maturity.

Not meeting with them only appeals to the far left, I don't see how it makes Republicans more likely to yield to lock them out.

We gain ground if we expose them as being uncooperative.

Of course, how effective these meetings actually are depends upon how they're conducted.

31. Obama, Reid, and other DEMS have been trying this for ONE YEAR... all that has resulted is the likes

of one LIE-be-man joining the obstructionists.

Under different circumstances, I would agree with your reasoning... but this is the United States Senate (not some foreign country) we're talking about... where everyone should be cooperatively working toward this nation's best interest.

When I hear such things as: (paraphrasing) "I'm not even going to read the bill, and I'm voting against it" ... and seeing such IN ACTION ever since OBAMA took office (and even before that... since the 2006/2008 congressional elections)... I say it's time for ONE BIG NUKE (in the interest of HCR w/public option).

36. re: "I think they can do both" okay... I can go along with that, with these caveats:
1. Reid tells him that they're gonna get NUKED, and there will be a SENATE VOTE on HCR (including the PUBLIC OPTION--which will be OPEN to anyone who chooses to elect same... i.e., no restrictions on access to the PUBLIC OPTION).

2. There *IS* a SENATE VOTE on same (see item #1)

3. Reid tells them, following said VOTE, "We are now ready to TALK with you about a myriad of other pressing matters... are you ready to TALK, or do we have to go NUCLEAR on your asses again?!"

4. bi-partisan TALKS begin

So you see, you and I can compromise... why can't they? Well, here's WHY NOT:

http://www.youtube.com/watch/v/GpcFhzHIxK0 -- about 7.5 minutes of Rachel Maddow showing FACTUALLY just how wrong wrong wrong wrong wrong wrong wrong wrong the republiCONS (Senator Collins and McConnell specifically) are... and this is typical of every issue and talking point the republiCONS seize upon! Even when they *KNOW* they are factually WRONG, they continue spewing their misinformation (and in many cases, outright LIES).

I'm way past SICK of their crap... I say, NUKE 'EM TIL THEY GLOW! :9

38. This again???
Didn't he do enough damage the first go round? So much for all those wonderful speeches he made. Apparently he was just trying to generate enough hot air to warm Washington DC during a cold snap. I don't think he meant a word he said. Scott Brown hit them hard and they were trying to reengage the base they lost with shenanigans like this one. He seems born to disappoint. He certainly doesn't mean anything he says. He never did.
