Need name of research websites.
I've been working on a project for well over ten years and know some of the obvious research means on the internet: newspaper archives, obits, corporate papers, county official records, property appraiser's offices, etc. Recently, someone showed me corporatewiki.com That was good too.

But, what I'm looking for is to determine relationships between people, as in related by marriage or blood. Other than obits and public announcements that make it on the net, is there any LEGAL way to determine if two families are related?

4. No, sorry. But I know there's lots of sites out there. Maybe someone
with some knowledge will weigh in.

2. Call your local public library and see if it has ancestrylibrary.com

Just one feature:

Search Census & Voter Lists Records

About This Category:
Few, if any, records reveal as many details about individuals and families as do government census records. Substitute records can be used when the official census is unavailable.

I've found quite a bit...more than I expected!

Good luck!...:hi:

5. Are these potential relations living or deceased....
Census records end in 1930 and much documentation on Genealogical sites are dated back only so far to protect the living.

I guess it really depends on exactly what you are trying to do that makes it hard to advise. I do genealogical research but trying to prove family ties is going to take some leg work like going to county courthouses, libraries for news articles, etc. Not everything is posted online so you will have to broaden your resources outside of the internet.

12. They're living.
And it should be a simple question of determining if two people are brothers, cousins or son and father.

20. This could be difficult....
Are the two parties willing or is one seeking info without the other's knowledge? if the second....I think they are limited. Ultimate proof will be the DNA. Secondary would be birth certificate and/or adoption records but that can even be manipulated (mostly in aggregious cases though and even that is rare). Obviously if there are known family ties that can help. Probate records/wills can produce names and obviously obituaries as well. Funeral home records may provide some names...maybe not. It depends. Birth and marriage announcements in newspapers can be helpful. Property records and church records may also provide some clues.

While much of the information in family trees can be incorrect or unproven, sometimes it can be a good tool for possible directions/connections. The historical data can help to verify the right path and even then you have to scrutinize it since census takers, record keepers and transcriptionists made mistakes too. The mistakes were not always that big though. Basically, if the person searching suspects that there may be a common ancestor then they might want to start there but since they are living they will have to rely more on tangible records, court houses, libraries, state records, etc.

Good luck!

6. Genealogy websites
Edited on Wed Feb-10-10 06:33 PM by chowder66
ancestry.com is the best. May have a free trial.
genealogy.com
familysearch.org (LDS site - free)
rootsweb.com (free)
county sites can have historical documents, census records, etc posted. (free)

google books can be helpful with tracking some info, limited though...at least at the moment. (free)

8. The great DUer Hannah Bell is great at connecting folks...
...please PM him/her.

My two-cents is all about historical connections between players and crimes of the national security state:

Covert Action - Institute for Media Analysis

Lies Of Our Times

Treasure Troves, those.

9. Census records
Take genealogy sites with a bag of salt; many trees involve a lot of wishful, unproved thinking. LDS is especially bad for non-Mormons -I've found a ton of bad info there. The other sites are a good place to start, but do your own research - there is a lot of bad info out there.

16. Your subjected header is "Census records"
How does one use that to connect people? I thought that was just a question of figuring out how many people live in a house.

Welcome back, Rumplestilskin.

19. Latter Day Saints have birth, marriage, census, records online for free. If a census
took place at a time you think your relatives were together it would show them in the same household. That might work.
