12. And where in the Bill of Rights does it say that only people who can, or will,
have children can marry?

Hey, maybe we should force people who haven't produced a child within two years of marriage to divorce...and prohibit menopausal women and men with vasectomies from marrying, too.

damn.

Lots of real lonely single brain cells out there!

15. Was that a DU poll? If so, the member should have gotten his/her ass alerted on.
Anyone at DU not supporting equal rights for all people, including the right to marry, shouldn't be here.

"1. We expect all of our members to support equal rights for all people, regardless of sexual orientation. That includes the right to marry."

I'd unfriend anyone opposed to equal human rights, unless I had a reasonable chance of leading them to the light. At 46, I choose my battles carefully. I don't spend much time on people who are genuinely recalcitrant.

22. At 57, I pick my battles even more carefully...
There are friends and neighbors I know I don't have a chance of "leading to the light", even with regards to basic human rights, but that doesn't mean these people are mean or evil.

In fact, many of them are extremely kind and thoughtful people.

And some of them know what my political and religious attitudes are...often 180 degrees from their own...yet they've never denigrated me or my beliefs. They practice tolerance, even knowing that my beliefs run totally counter to their own.

I can't punish them for their beliefs as long as they're willing to view me as a person beyond my beliefs. If someone wants to "unfriend" me because of what I do or do not believe, well, that's their choice.

:)

24. I've never known a truly kind, thoughtful homophobe, racist, anti-Semite, mysognist, or misandrist.
If anyone wants to "unfriend" me for standing by principles that harm no one but contribute to human evolution, I'll consider it a character endorsement.

16. Actually, it says it in the 1st Amendment.
In the 'hands off religion' clause. If you belong to a gay church, and the pastor marries you, the government cannot say you are not married. (Even though it does.) That would be interfering in religious beliefs.

IMO.

36. There is a difference between saying you are married
and legally recognizing them as such.

A church can tell me I'm an eagle, that doesn't mean I'm legally recognized as one.

33. Try Amendment V, XIV and Article IV sec 1
"no state shall ... deny to any person within its jurisdiction the equal protection of the laws".

and

Full Faith and Credit shall be given in each State to the public Acts, Records, and judicial Proceedings of every other State. And the Congress may by general Laws prescribe the Manner in which such Acts, Records and Proceedings shall be proved, and the Effect thereof.
