Today Show Mistakes Michael J. Fox For Terry Fox, Dead Canadian Hero (VIDEO)

Michael J. Fox is Canadian-American, but he is not a sports hero.

Meredith Vieria and the TODAY Show could have used that bit of information last Friday when they confused the famous actor with Terry Fox, a deceased Canadian marathoner who raised millions for cancer research by running across Canada on just one leg.

The morning show crew was guessing who might light the Olympic cauldron when Vieria mistakenly called Terry "Michael" and a picture of Terry Fox was displayed on the screen, followed by a photo of Michael J. Fox.

Separated at birth? :eyes:

Another sterling example of American media at its finest.

1. Meh...
...Terry Fox's mother, Betty Fox, was also part of the opening ceremonies (she was one of the people who carried in the Olympic flag). So people were talking about a lot of Canadian "Fox"es that night. A slip isn't that big a deal under those circumstances.

2. They showed a picture of the wrong guy.
Seems like more than a mere gaffe.

4. Umm...
...what do you think a gaffe is exactly? Some guy getting two people named Fox mixed up and throwing up the wrong picture he probably grabbed off google or something when they're both being discussed at the same time during a live broadcast would seem to be the definition of a mere gaffe.

3. HUGH difference between those two in Canada
Terry Fox is considered a hero. There are streets and schools named after him.

Michael J. Fox is an actor who deserted Canada decades ago.

5. Deserted?
He's a pretty damned decent Canadian AFAIC and one hell of a spokesman for Parkinsons.

6. Oh. My. God.
She din't.

Oh dear.

And the New York Daily News reported throughout an entire article yesterday that "Jen Heile," not "Jen Heil," failed to be Canada's first Olympic gold medal winner on Canadian soil.

Oh well, what can you expect of a country that does this:

7. I remember that flag incident
You know those marines are still marching in circles on a base in Greenland somewhere.

I was happy that they asked to be allowed to redo it in Toronto during the next game. Wasn't that the game that Joe Carter launched it over the wall in the bottom of the ninth against Mitch Williams to win the series?
