David Sirota

Snip

Of course, while McChrystal’s insubordination was extra-constitutional in spirit, he at least made the effort to obtain the commander in chief’s rubber-stamp approval. The same cannot be said for the rogues inside Obama’s Drug Enforcement Agency (DEA).

Recall that one year ago, Obama instructed the DEA to follow his campaign pledge and respect local statutes legalizing medicinal marijuana. When the DEA kept raiding pot dispensaries in states that had passed such laws, Attorney General Eric Holder reiterated the cease-and-desist decree, stating, "What said during the campaign is now American policy."

As even more raids nonetheless continued, the Justice Department then issued an explicit memo ordering federal agents to refrain from prosecuting those who are in "compliance with existing state laws providing for the medical use of marijuana."
And yet the DEA has recently intensified its crackdown. Here in Colorado—where voters enshrined medical marijuana’s legality in our state constitution—the feds not only raided two dispensaries, but did so in a way that deliberately humiliated their superiors.

1. The DEA works under federal laws and statutes...
under which Marijauana is still illegal.

The clinics fall under state law.

The U.S. Congress needs to act, though that won't happen with Republican obstructionism in the Senate.

4. Take away pot prosecution and the DEA's precious budget would be cut in half...
As Governor William J. Le Petomane famously said.. "We have to protect our phoney baloney jobs here, gentlemen! We must do something about this immediately! Immediately! Immediately! Harrumph! Harrumph! Harrumph!"

The DEA is a bureaucracy like any other government agency. They will do anything to protect or enlarge their annual budget. It's time to get rid of the federal marijuana statutes. It's a fucking PLANT not a narcotic.

5. Agree that these agents are rogue, but these raids weren't on "dispensaries"
The caregiver/grower that was recently busted was breaking state law. His plant count was about double the legal limit.

Do I think plant limits are fair? No, but that's not the point.

Nobody was arrested in the raid on the lab, but product was confiscated. It'll probably be returned eventually. Shitty, but again not a raid on a dispensary.

7. Just more evidence that we live in police state.
If the Executive Branch can't even control an agency gone 'rogue', we're all in worse shape than even I thought.
