White supremacist group eyes John Day for new HQ

Posted: Feb 21, 2010 01:39 AM CST

Possibility brings picketing, opposition

From KTVZ.COM news sources

Leaders of the Aryan Nations say they want to move the white supremacist group's headquarters from Idaho to the Eastern Oregon community of John Day, the Blue Mountain Eagle newspaper reported last week.

Paul R. Mullet, who said he's national director of the movement, was in John Day, looking at property to buy for a new "national compound," according to the article posted Wednesday by Editor Scotta Callister on the paper's Website, www.bluemountaineagle.com.

Callister reported, "The visit stirred concern in many quarters, where residents worried about the neo-Nazi sentiments of the movement and the negative impact that it could have on the community."

The group teaches that the white race is the only one descended from Adam, and that Jews and non-whites are the natural enemies of white people.

The mission, outlined on the group's Website, is to create a state for the "Aryan race," separate from all non-whites, and a "lawful Congress of our race."

Mullet, wearing a uniform shirt with a swastika patch on it, told the newspaper the group's goal is to create a homeland for white people.

6. The "Transamerica" bicycle route goes through John Day
on its way from Virginia to Oregon. I have never ridden it, but I would hate for my cycling friends to have to travel through miles and miles of unfriendly terrain. That high desert is inhospitable enough as it is.

8. like in idaho
it would be a gate off a dirt road and a media hubbub. aryans didn't exactly infest the north idaho woods - just their reputation.

19. Eh...I made the mistake of stopping at the Smelterville gas station
There were some scary dudes there, and a bunch of "Christian identity" literature on display around the counter. It was definitely "safari territory"*, but it was on the main road enough that I'd accidentally decide to buy a snack there.

*keep the doors locked, windows up, and fill the gas tank before you enter, so the hyenas don't get ya

3. Sad thing is, if it wasn't for their vociferous hatred of Jews...
...these guys would be indistinguishable from tea party conservatives.

The only difference I can see is that TP conservatives crouch their anti-semitism behind a facade of pro-Israel, "Judeo-Christian" rhetoric. Openly hating/fearing blacks, latinos, immigrants, gays, etc gets a pass these days.

15. I want to vomit every time they throw that Judeo-Christian BS out there.
One one site that I am on, they make veiled anti-Jew comments all the time...until they "need" the Jews for something.

5. Oh, hell no!
Oregon may not be the most diverse state, but we certainly won't stand for this kind of shit. Unfortunately/Fortunately we have one of the strongest free speech clauses in the country, so there's likely not much basis for keeping them from coming here. It's because of that clause that we have one of the largest concentrations of strip clubs per capita in the country.

Oregon has a reputation as being a very liberal state, which it partly is - in the metropolitan areas. Get into the rural areas, and it can take an unsettling Libertarian turn quickly.

12. You should see the negative comments after this KTVZ 21 article
The Aryans aren't exactly getting the red carpet rolled out for their arrival. I am not sure what I can do yet to prevent this, but as a resident of Central Oregon, I plan to take action.

I am hoping that after the debacle of the Rajneshees taking over Antelope, with the ensuing death plots and all, that locals will react more quickly when crap like this raises its ugly head. Judging from the comments after this article I link to, people are speaking out and getting ready to roll these Aryans:

10. John Day is the wrong place in Orygun...
better they attempt to settle in between Klamath Falls and Lakeview where Al Q almost had a camp up and running,

In John Day, they will just be 'targets.'

13. Oregon is one of the few states progressive Democrats
seem to have a foothold. Seems to me the white supremacists have picked the wrong state.

17. John Day was home to a large Chinese community
in the early days, and today it is famous for the Kam Wha Chung and Co Museum, which is the store and medical clinic left nearly untouched. This is a National Historic Landmark. That is about all I know of John Day.
