What's with Jim Webb?
From his book, "A Time To Fight":

"Ours is a country founded on the premise that all of us should have the opportunity to advance as far as our energy and talent can take us. But the question for today's America is a bit more complex than that. It is not whether someone should have the opportunity to make a lot of money. Rather, it becomes whether these hyperbolic incomes reflect a proper share from having generated economic health for all Americans, or whether they are the product of money being made at the expense of other Americans."

Another excerpt:

"Another reality is that there is something going on in the American business community that transcends the impact of globalization and we don't quite know where to push the buttons to fix it. Among all the "first world" nations, America stands alone in the scale of the rewards its profit makers and corporate leaders are voting for themselves, at the expense of their workers and even their own shareholders. This curious and disturbing reality has very complicated roots, which unfortunately have largely been ignored by the top leadership of both parties. But it is palpable."

Yet Webb has received a lifetime rating of 54 percent from the U.S. Chamber of Commerce.

Guess that's what a lot of Democrats (and politicians) do: say one thing, do something completely different.

1. Indeed, what is going on with him? He came in seeming like a very honest
person for the job, but one certainly wonders what his motivation is for some of his stances these days.

3. Like Geithner, He Was Long A Republican Before Switching Parties
He was Secretary of the Navy under Reagan, I believe.

4. Actually, not quite true
He was a supporter of Reagan sure, and was indeed his Secretary of the Navy, but to my knowledge he's always been a registered Democrat.

5. Regarding the 2nd paragraph. It's palpable? My family has been
affected and it has resulted in me becoming a very, very, angry woman who had been fairly content throughout most of my life.

Never rich, always worked hard, and several of my kids, who have families of their own, have been slammed.

6. Yes, But the Chamber of Commerce
is not the voice of multinationals or plutocrats. Most of its members are smaller or medium-sized business. And not everything it support is worth opposing.

Look at some of the individual bills on that link that the CoC supported. Presumably, those are part of the 54%.

(3) COLLEGE OPPORTUNITY AND AFFORDABILITY-H.R. 4137

On July 31, the Senate passed the conference report on H.R. 4137, the College Opportunity and Affordability Act by an 83-8 vote. The bill reauthorizes and amends the Higher Education Act of 1965 by providing financial relief for students, enhancing access to and affordability of higher education, and creating more flexibility within the higher education system.

The Chamber supported the conference report because it allows employees to align their educational goals with the needs of American business. Many of the programs highlighted in H.R. 4137-especially those related to science, technology, engineering, and mathematics-help reduce the education gap. This legislation also assists in developing long-term solutions to expand the pool of educated and qualified American workers and improve excellence in education.

(6) RENEWABLE ENERGY AMENDMENT-H.R. 3221

On April 10, the Senate approved a Chamber-supported amendment to H.R. 3221, the Foreclosure Prevention Act, by a vote of 88-8.

This amendment contained important incentives that would have aided the development of renewable and alternative energy technologies essential to our nation's future. Although this amendment was adopted by the Senate, it was excluded from the final version of H.R. 3221, which the president signed into law on July 30.

(8) ECONOMIC STIMULUS REBATES-H.R. 5140

The Senate overwhelmingly passed H.R. 5140, the Recovery Rebates and Economic Stimulus for the American People Act, on February 7 by a vote of 81-16. This legislation provides incentives to encourage consumer spending, increase business investment, and promote job growth, all of which are critical to improving the nation's economic outlook.

The Chamber supported this bill because it includes bonus depreciation and increased expensing provisions, which reduce the amount of time required for businesses to recover investment costs. In addition, the legislation increases loan limits for government-sponsored enterprises and for the Federal Housing Administration.

7. He was all bluster, like so many politicians
He came in like some working man's hero, but he's not even supporting the Public Option in the Senate Bill, he's clearly a craven guy, carries guns and talks a big game, but when it comes down to it, he's the kind of guy who is so risk adverse that he will become a waste of a Senate seat, and really, the sooner he can be replaced with an actual Democrat the better. He's one of Reagan's guys, and Reagan was a lousy President. A Republican President.

8. Since McDonnell the republican won the governor ship he and Warner
have backtracked on everything democratic they had been doing. Guess they are afraid they will loose the next election. TERM LIMITS WILL FIX (ALMOST) EVERYTHING.
