Kevin Garn (R-UT): I did not have sex with that 15 year old, and I paid her to say so

Utah House GOP leader says he paid off woman

By The Associated Press
Friday, March 12th, 2010 -- 8:11 am

http://rawstory.com/2010/03/utah-house-gop-leader-paid-woman/

In a shocking statement on the House floor, Kevin Garn, 55, of Layton said he paid her to keep quiet about the incident during his unsuccessful U.S. congressional bid in 2002, but did not have sexual contact with her.

Garn said the woman, who he didn't identify on the floor, has been calling news outlets and that he wanted to be open about the incident that occurred when he was 28 years old, before any stories appeared.

A woman identifying herself as Cheryl Maher told The Salt Lake Tribune that she and Garn were in a hot tub nude when she was 15 years old.

"This has just been a nightmare for me," Maher said in a telephone interview with the newspaper from New Hampshire. "I just want to tell the truth because it's part of the healing process for me."

Garn told The Associated Press early Friday that Maher was the woman and that they were nude during a "spur of the moment" skinny dip. He said she worked for him in a warehouse.

"We sat there and that was it," Garn said.

16. "...it is apparent to me that this payment was also a mistake..."
Didn't seem like a mistake at the time, because $150K was a pretty cheap way to keep a bid for Congress intact. Plus, since his wife signed off on the payoff, she had apparently completed her own "healing process."

Reading that entire statement from Garn is like watching a hamster run, run, run in his little exercise wheel...cute, but damn...am I glad that I'm not that hamster.

9. Here is the other side of the coin.
At 15 the girl was not totally ignorant. She should be ashamed of what she did in her youth. This does not excuse him but it does not make her a heroine either.

24. You omitted the best line:
House members gave him thunderous applause for his honesty and embraced him.

Concealing an indiscretion (or worse) for a quarter-century--and only admitting it when he was about to be exposed--now equals honesty. Another one for the if-this-were-a-Democrat files.

30. Patrick Kennedy is right. This is the sort of thing
that distracts us from war, suicide bombers, lack of health insurance, living from payday to payday, if one has a payday. I keep waiting for someone to come out with a plea for mental distress because of something that happened to a politician while he or she was in kindergarten.
