The front door was smashed out at Congresswoman Gabrielle Giffords’ congressional office last night.

At 2:40 a.m., just a few hours after staff left the building after the late-night vote, the alarm system went off, said spokesman C.J. Karamargin. The panel to the front door and the glass panel alongside it were smashed out. The perpetrator likely had to hop the gated fence to get access to the door, since it’s not viewable from the parking lot.

Karamargin said it was unclear if the glass had been shot out with a kind of pellet gun, if it had been kicked or smashed with an object. The door has been covered with plywood.

Police had no more information when reached this morning.

PHOENIX (AP) — Authorities say the Tucson, Ariz., congressional office of Rep. Gabrielle Giffords was vandalized a few hours after the House vote overhauling the nation's health care system.

Someone either kicked or shot out a glass door and side window of the office early Monday, but it did not appear that anyone entered the office. Authorities are looking into whether a pellet gun was used.

There were no staffers in the office at the time, and no one was injured.

U.S. Capitol police have been notified of the crime, which Tucson police are investigating.

Authorities have not linked the vandalism to Sunday's approval of the health care legislation, which Giffords, a Democrat, supported.

Over the past few weeks, both protesters and supporters of the legislation spent hours outside Giffords' office, which is located in a small office complex.

Edited to add:

I am finding that this is a much bigger story. I posted in LBN here:

1. So was our County Dem office
Over the weekend, someone decided to send us a message.

They could have called, or written an email, or even stopped by to talk. But instead, they decided to throw a brick through the window of Sedgwick County Democratic Party Headquarters.

Luckily, no one was in the office at the time and the only thing damaged was the window itself.

As we saw yesterday with the historic passage of health care reform, we Democrats are not about to be intimidated by petty thug tactics.

Help us send a message today. It's going to take a lot more than a brick to stop us from working for Kansans and electing good Democrats.

With your contribution of $50, $25, or even $10, you'll be ensuring that we can continue to work for all citizens by electing Democrats right here in Sedgwick County.

Of course, the office is a bit of a mess and there is a lot of work to be done. But Democrats know what means to work hard for what we want. With your help today, we'll do what needs to be done in the clean up and on Election Day as well.

Please click here to make a contribution today.

Thank you for all that you do. Brick or no brick, this office stays open because of you.

Best,

Lyndsay Stauble
