I've got a live one on Facebook now
A person who I know is a Conservative just posted this to her status:

So how come healthcare is (now) considered a 'right' but food is not? Nobody I know is screaming about the millions of hungry people in America. I can't see how healthcare will help the starving. Hmmm, maybe next on Obama/Pelosi/Reid's list is a Food Provision Bill. Coz if Pelosi thinks healthcare is vital to Americans... in their pursuit of happiness, I can't imagine how much more vital a full tummy is to that end!

So, now she's worried about food?? This is the same person who can't stand to help anyone unless something is in it for her. I wrote back to her:

Why are you so angry?? There is nothing in this bill that will harm you or your family. As a matter of fact, you will be able to keep your insurance if you or your child gets sick. You will be able to get insurance if you can't get it now. And I'm one person who works everyday to try to make this country a better place and that starts with the least of us. That's why we donate to food banks (Oh boy Socialism) and give food when we can.

And she replies back:

Come to think of it how about a federally funded Coffeecare Bill. I need my frickin coffee and I don't want some cheap ass cup o joe from QT, I want Starbucks, dammit...and if I can't afford it well then all you rich folks out there need to buy it for me! I can't pursue my life, liberty or happiness without top quality caffeine!

4. Yup. And the stimulus package actually SUPPLEMENTED food stamps in some places...
I know in SoCal, because of the high cost of living, food stamps recipients are now also receiving food boxes twice a month.

6. typical selfish republican asshole
All they care about is themselves, they don't give a damn about anyone else, especially the poor or people who need help.

7. Wow another response from her
'donating' to food banks is NOT socialism, it's CHARITY, also known as the old English word for love. It is right to give to those in need. As it shows our love for our fellow man. America outgives in pure donation from individuals (not talking here about our govnt) toward those in need more than any other country. Percentage wise, btw, ... not because we have more people in our country. Do the research. We are the MOST giving people. What IS wrong is when our government FORCES us to give...that IS socialism. This will be the first time in history that the FEDERAL government mandates (aka forces) it's citizens to buy a service. If you can't see how maddening that is, how wrong, how unconstitutional such an action is, then I can't help you. This is America not France... And I would like to keep it that way.

Oh and one of her friends responded as well:

maybe its because we will have to pay out of our shrinking household budgets to fund healthcare for those who will not work, and for illegals. And maybe its because this bill imposes steep increases in expense for businesses, which do not have endless supplies of cash - therefor in order to afford this bill, they will have to decrease their payroll, adding to the unemployment boom. Or maybe its because those of us who consider the killing of unborn children murder will be forced to pay for it. Why AREN'T you angry?

So I write back:

WOW!! Look who's read the latest from the Republican talking points. Illegals (as you notate them) are not covered in this bill. Small businesses will see the cost of healthcare finally go down for them, as they will now get tax breaks for covering their employees. And for the last time - there is no coverage for Abortion. I know you guys love to put that fear in everyone, but it's just not there. maybe if you would read the bill instead of spouting what the Republican party has told you, then you might like the bill. But no way, that would be too much to do at this point.

9. I've got one on my FB page, too. Angrily thanking those "better off" for taking care of her
Edited on Tue Mar-23-10 01:12 PM by Atman
It's so strange. She claims the stimulus package somehow put her out of a job -- doesn't explain how or why -- and posted a bitter, sarcastic screed about how now she'll have access to better health care than many of the people who will be paying for her. "Brilliant!" she says.

13. I got de friended when I went after another friend's idiot friend.
Okay - I was totally in the wrong to go after someone on someone ELSE'S wall, but since the *%)#*(% person started actively bitching and whining about "its bad enough we have to pay for gunshot wounds for gang members" and then followed that bit of nonsense up with "the problem won't be fixed until we quit letting people without medical insurance into the ER" I took her offer of SELECTIVE EUTHANASIA as EXTREMELY OFFENSIVE and told her I wanted to be on a death panel so I could make sure that people with crappy moral values like her wouldn't get medical treatment, then called her a "One Sick Puppy."

My friend demanded an apology - I refused / got de-friended. Never got to ask how the idiot wanted to identify GUNSHOT VICTIMS without health insurance - perhaps Big Yellow Armbands??? Because how the hell else would you expect a health care person to decide whether or not to stop someone from BLEEDING TO DEATH if you don't know whether they have insurance or not???

My ultimate nightmare scenario: "Stop operating on that child - her father just got fired for rushing to the hospital after she was hit by a car, so now they don't have health insurance!"

Fricking Idiot. (My friend says I shouldn't judge or name-call - BITE ME! Grrrr.....)

14. I can share my meal with a neighbor who is hungry, I can't give him chemo
or fix his compound fracture, or give her some "insulin" that I grew in my garden.

There are soup kitchens and free meals available at many places provided by people with no special training or tools. The same cannot be said OR done with health care.

As for health care being part of "pursuing happiness" it isn't. It is far too often VITAL to "life" however. Which comes before "liberty" in the list of what all "men" are endowed/entitled to.

I've been unfriended because of this issue- so I know how it can be.

15. I had one of my FB friends leave a furious comment for me last night
that has gotten me so mad I could spit. A poster here last night mentioned the new Facebook group "Remind Rush to leave for Costa Rica". I checked the group out and thought it was funny, so I joined. My FB status updated to include that bit of information and this guy left me a crazed message about how Rush never said he was leaving for Costa Rica permanently, just go there for the medical care at the clinics springing up to accommodate rich patrons (this after Rush affirmed in December after his health scare in Hawaii that the US had the best health care in the world) The "friend" went on to rant that Rush was the most truthful man in the media  and that I should respect Rush for that. I am still trying to decide how to handle this. On one hand I don't want to let it go, but on the other, this person is going to be in a position of importance in a group I belong to in the near future and I don't want to screw up our relationship so that I get the shaft there.

racist comments. Homophobic comments. And the daily litany of regurgitated Rush/Sean/Glenn comments.

18. If the bush administration and the red state governors hadn't cut
school breakfasts and lunches there would be more children getting something to eat. I think the democrats should re-instate the breakfast and lunches, but most of them were from cuts by republican governors, Phewlenty of Minnesota was one.

She's acting like it is over the top for someone to want to survive a treatable ailment or physical condition? And she's comparing that to getting the right kind of coffee?

Elitist, indeed.
