MONTCOAL, W.Va. (AP) — An explosion rocked a remote coal mine with a history of safety problems Monday, killing 12 workers and trapping 10 others thousands of feet underground.
Rescuers early Tuesday were making their way to the area the workers were believed trapped at Massey Energy Co.’s sprawling Upper Big Branch mine, where the blast occurred around 3 p.m., said Kevin Stricklin, an administrator for the federal Mine Safety and Health Administration.
--- Massey Energy is run by CEO Don Blankenship, who counts Sean Hannity and various Republican talking heads among his backers and promoters. Blankenship has a history of violating environmental and safety regulations in both deep mining and through his full-blown promotion of mountaintop removal. In his quest for deregulation of his industry, he has personally spent over $5 million of his personal fortune to elect GOP candidates to rewrite the laws.
