Cookbook has 'salted and freshly ground black people' typo
Edited on Sat Apr-17-10 10:56 PM by Liberal_in_LA
I'm black and thought the typo was kinda of funny. Not so much the 'small minded' remark

Cookbook pulped over 'ground black people' typo

An Australian publisher is reprinting 7,000 cookbooks over a recipe for pasta with "salt and freshly ground black people."

He told The Sydney Morning Herald for a story printed Saturday that, "We're mortified that this has become an issue of any kind and why anyone would be offended, we don't know."

Sessions said the publisher would replace the book for any buyer "small-minded enough" to complain. The reprinting will cost 20,000 Australian dollars ($18,500).

3. Pepper, obviously. Amusing freudian slip, or worse though...
Edited on Sat Apr-17-10 11:03 PM by BlooInBloo
I suppose it's theoretically possible that it's just some software auto-correct thing though.

15. I know of none that would do that.
And I've seen some interesting software decisions.

26. It's believeable as a combination of a typo and an auto-spell checker
Edited on Sun Apr-18-10 07:38 AM by muriel_volestrangler
With 'o' next to 'p', it's possible the 'pp' was typed as 'op' - and 'r' is next to 'e' so that's a possible typo too.. Here's the top suggestions my plugin spellchecker gives for some typos for 'pepper'

peppe -> pepper, pepped

peoper -> proper, pepper

peope -> pope, people

peppee -> pepper, pepped

peopee -> people, peonage

28. No, it was either Freudian or deliberate
And, given the wingnutty reaction of the publisher, I wouldn't rule out the latter!

35. I wouldn't call the publisher's reaction 'wingnutty'
And you live in a different world if you think a publisher like Penguin puts something like that in deliberately. If it helps, trying saying what he said in an Australian accent. You know, one that sounds like the speaker laughs sometimes.

31. The DU spellchecker gives "people" as the first alternative for "peppel" and "pepple"
And probably a few others.

5. Saw that in the morning paper
The exercise will cost Penguin $20,000, the head of publishing, Bob Sessions, said. At $3300 a letter, it's a pricey typo.

Stock will not be recalled from bookshops because it would be "extremely hard" to do so, Mr Sessions said. Copies remained on the shelves in city bookshops yesterday, selling for $20.

Mr Sessions could not understand why some readers had found the slip offensive.

"We're mortified that this has become an issue of any kind and why anyone would be offended, we don't know," he said.

"It's called the Pasta Bible, almost every recipe has ground black pepper in it, mostly in the same place .

"In one particular recipe misprint occurs which obviously came from a spell checker. When it comes to the proofreader, of course they should have picked it up, but proofreading a cookbook is an extremely difficult task. I find that quite forgivable.

"We've said to bookstores that if anyone is small minded enough to complain about this very ... silly mistake then we will happily replace for them."

14. "To Serve Man"

Anyway, I agree about the small-minded remark.

I don't know what it is with people these days being completely unwilling to admit they fucked up, from Bush to the Vatican. I mean, just fucking say "I'm sorry", don't try to be cute about it.

25. Especially when the word is spelled correctly...
Spell check won't pick up if the word is used incorrectly, only if it is spelled incorrectly.

22. I never salt black people.
All you end up tasting is the salt! Plus it's bad for you. If you must season them, try a mild spice (perhaps turmeric?), beginning with small amounts then building up till you hit that "sweet spot". Yum!
