Walt Kelly (1913-1973), the animator, cartoonist and creator of the classic comic strip Pogo, created this poster for the first Earth Day



Known for intriguingly arranging objects and mixed media in "combines," artist Robert Rauschenberg (1925-2008) created this piece for the first Earth Day.



This poster was created to raise awareness of the day by a regional office for the Federal Water Pollution Control Administration. The FWPCA oversaw water-quality enforcement until the 1972 Clean Water Act handed that authority to the Environmental Protection Agency.

I took off from jr college classes that day in Northern Virginia
it was a blast and very peaceful with good bands, booths and speeches
