The town I grew up in, Chicago Heights, Illinois, had basically been reduced to boarded up storefronts, and huge parking lots that no one used for anything because there were no more businesses there since the industrial base in this area was destroyed over the past 20 or 30 years. And along with that came prostitution, drug dealing and all the other things that seem to take over in depressed areas. Good place to get shot. It was a horror show.
Thats changing. I noticed it today when I drove through there. There are dozens of new restaurants and small to medium sized grocery stores along this same stretch that was a hell hole a few years ago.
No more obvious drug dealing and prostitution going on in broad daylight any more. Good police presence. I wouldn't mind raising my family in this area as it is right now. Not ten years ago.
These are mostly Mexican immigrants who are filling this void now and actually rebuilding this community from the ground up.
I sure hope they succeed.
