1. Obama took this issue right out of the repubs hands and made it his own.
he is the POTUS who agreed with Sarah and the rest.

He deserves the criticism. He made a bad decision, let's admit it.

3. Yep
He could have been battering Grifterella had he not decided to include the utterly stupid idea of off shore drilling. That said I'm glad he's rational enough to have a rethink.

10. That is what is so wrong with all this bi partisan bs, there is no core principle
to believe in.

You get people who are democrats defending a ridiculous decision by the POTUS to open up areas for drilling, just because he is a Democrat.

Then you get people who are really upset about that decision by the POTUS.

The end result is division within the Democratic Party. While we could be fighting for a unified agenda, we will fight amongst ourselves. This is the saddest part about the whole thing, and we keep getting watered down old GOP ideas in the name of bi partisanship because there are Democrats who will defend a decision made by Obama to the hilt, even if it flies in the face of everything they say they believe in. We cannot gain critical mass to push an agenda through. Obama is dividing the Democratic Party with many of his policies and we are losing the agenda.

The oil spill and Obama's decision to open up drilling is the most perfect example.

4. hopefully this catastrophe will lead him to rethink the potential
for nuclear catastrophe as well. Better to consider these very real possibilities *before* a city or entire state are rendered uninhabitable, hundreds of thousands lose their lives and neighboring residents face decades of increased cancer.

7. You DO realize Obama has been active in lessening nuclear
weapons around the world, right? Google it; he's been the most proactive president on arms control in decades.

12. yes. even while he's put new nuclear energy plants back on the table with the other hand
but Chernobyl was far away and 3 Mile Island long ago, and the many, many near misses will buried... so hopefully this catastrophe will remind him that nuclear power has the potential to create equally if not more devastating environmental destruction.

5. Well, it wasn't like there was going to be any drilling in that time anyway
Hell, I doubt if they had even got the seismic ships out of port yet, much less found some place to drill. This is just how Obama is looking concerned.

I would be much more impressed if he simply reversed himself now.

Oil Spill Could Delay, Alter Obama Plans for More Offshore Drilling
Reporting from Washington

April 29, 2010 | 3:06 p.m.

The massive oil spill in the Gulf of Mexico could trigger changes in President Obama's recently announced plans to open new coastal areas for offshore drilling, administration officials said Thursday.

Earlier this month Obama unveiled a draft plan designed to open the way for to new drilling off the Atlantic Coast, in Alaska and in the Gulf of Mexico. But on Thursday, White House Press Secretary Robert Gibbs and other administration officials, including top energy and climate advisor Carol Browner, said the plan was entering a public comment phase and could undergo modifications as a result of the oil spill and possible public reaction.
