Do you think the media was bias when they...
compared the cost of filling up 3 different vehicles they used a Chevy Suburban, Toyota Camry, and a Ford F-150?

By the way the costs for fill-up

Chevy Suburban - $117.39 (31 gallons) $3.79
Toyota Crap - $55.69 (18.5 gallons) $3.01
Ford F-150 - $105.25 (30 gallons) $3.50

*********************************************

It appears they were messing with the numbers.

What cost is based on above gallons and $3 a gallon

Chevy Suburban - $93.00 (31 gallons)
Toyota Crap - $55.50 (18.5 gallons)
Ford F-150 - $90.00 (30 gallons)

I drive a Chevy Cavalier - $45.00 (15.00 gallons)

3. and so much depends on the MPG.. and how much you drive
If the suburban's tank full lasts you a month it might be totally acceptable

The camry might be a commuter vehicle and may require 3 fill-ups a month..

4. WHy is a Camry a "Crap"?
Edited on Sat May-05-07 08:27 AM by Matsubara
The first car I ever drove was a 77 Corolla. I put 190K miles on it before we put it out of its misery. It was one of the most trustworthy and dependable cars I've ever had.

I live in Japan now and am grateful that there are so many reasonably priced Japanese models available that working class people can afford, and that get great gas mileage.

More than you can say for the overpriced, padded-priced, gas-guzzling US fleet.

20. I bought it 10 years ago because Consumer Reports rated it highly
I didn't find out it was made in Kentucky until last year when I knocked my side view mirror off and had to have it replaced (for some reason, I had to get a different mirror depending on where it was made).

Post fact, I was very happy about it (although the American mirror cost more).

6. The 1st set of numbers excluding the cost of gas was media provided
2nd set of numbers are my numbers using a set gas price.

If you notice on the media provided the total cost of fillup divided by the fuel tank capacity did not equal the same for all 3 vehicles.

7. What are you referring to? If they were comparing the vehicles
costs to operate I would guess a Toyota Camry would travel at least as far or even more on 18.5 gallons than a Chevy Suburban with 31 gallons or a Ford F-150 would with 30 gallons. It doesn't make sense to use different gas prices though. You drive a Chevy Cavalier and you call a Camry crap? That's a f---ing laugh.

9. I owned a Cavalier briefly
back in the 80s. It was a cute little station wagon. One day I was driving down the street and the rear window fell out! Right on the road. Didn't break though. Cost me a fortune to get it put back in. And I worried about it falling out again until I finally got rid of that car.

12. I always say I can't afford to own a Chevy, I can't
pay for a full time mechanic. The last GM car I owned was a 1977 Blazer, the thing was a piece of crap if ever there was a piece of crap. I once heard a guy bragging on the virtues of Chevys, he said he could practically take an engine out rebuild it and put it back in blindfolded. No thanks, I don't want to become that familiar with my car.

16. I have owned my Mercury Tracer since 1999 and have no
complaints. But why is a Camry crap? The Camry is consistently on Consumer Reports best buy list. I bought a Toyota Tacoma last year, I swore I would never buy a Japanese vehicle but the domestic companies just don't make a smaller pick-up that can even come close to competing with the Toyota. Oh, and by the way the Tacoma is assembled in California and has a higher domestic content than some of the so called domestic brands.

21. From Level Field Institute -- What You Drive, Drives America
http://www.levelfieldinstitute.org/domestic.htm

Domestic Content by Category (2005 - sales weighted)
Ford, GM and Chrysler Group 76%
Japanese Automakers 48%
Korean Automakers 3%
European Automakers 7%
Foreign Automaker Avg. 40%

Domestic Content by Brand (2005 - sales weighted)
BMW 10%
Chrysler (domestic brands) 78%
Ford (domestic brands) 78%
GM (domestic brands) 74%
Honda/Acura 59%
Hyundai/Kia 3%
Isuzu 79%
Mitsubishi 36%
Nissan/Infiniti 46%
Subaru 26%
Toyota/Lexus 47%
Volkswagen/Audi 4%

If I am going to support America and its citizens it will be by buying American as much as possible. We got into this sorry mess with workers not being able to find jobs that will support their families by buying Japanese/Korean and others. And it is getting worse when American jobs are being exported to China and India and other countries that pay the workers much less.

22. Too bad US automakers fought increased CAFE standards so hard
I have always bought American but my next car will most likely be a Prius, unless something changes and an American manufacturer comes out with a comparable model.

11. But they all drove the same miles
Toyota burned about half the fuel that either Chevy or Ford did. I think one reason they used those three auto makers is they are the top three in the USA and Toyota just took over Top Spot...They must be doing something right...

My Ford used to actually stop dead in its tracks on the street!
My U.S.-made VW was a pile o'junk.

THAT'S when I turned to the Japanese.
