Candidate back on the ballot – but different party, different race
Just days after Jay Lawson was disqualified to run as a Democratic candidate for Clay County presiding commissioner, he’s back on the ballot.

But this time as a Republican candidate for Clay County recorder of deeds.

Lawson, a former Eastern commissioner in the county, will face Mike Ebenroth in the Aug. 3 primary. In previous elections, Lawson ran as a Republican, but recently switched to the Democratic side to run for presiding commissioner.

The winner will face Democratic incumbent Robert Sevier, who also had been disqualified but who refiled by the 5 p.m. Wednesday deadline.

Sevier and Lawson were disqualified last week by the Missouri Ethics Commission for failing to submit personal financial disclosure statements.

Sevier was granted a do-over because he was the incumbent and the only candidate who had filed for the office. State law prohibited Lawson from refiling for presiding commissioner because the incumbent, Democrat Ed Quick, had complied with the state law.

So Lawson switched parties again – and races.
