Obama has no easy route (wrt Kagan sexual preference)
Obama: "She is gay."
Opposition: "Choosing a Supreme Court Justice who is openly gay! OMG! It reeks of judicial activism!!!

Obama: "She isn't gay."
Opposition: "So something is WRONG with being gay!? Is that what you're saying!?"

Obama: "It doesn't matter if she is gay or straight."
Opposition: "Oh? So it's DADT in civilian life now, eh!"

So what do YOU think Obama should do? It isn't all that easy, is it?

Tell the truth if asked. If he knows she's gay, say so. If he knows she isn't, say so. If he doesn't know one way or the other, say so. If he's going to be attacked no matter what he says than it might as well be for being honest.

It really is pretty easy.

3. Tell the truth.
That's pretty easy, isn't it? It is almost as easy as learning being gay is an "ORIENTATION!" Having sex in a pool full of jello...that is a sexual "PREFERENCE!"

4. I will try to remember that "orientation" is the preferred phrase.
No insult intended, so I apologize.

5. It isn't the "prefered" phrase, it is the correct one.
All one can do is learn from mistakes and try not to repeat them.

6. Indeed.

But I think a little less persnickety-ness on your part might also be "prefered".

-----------
'preferred' and 'prefered' ...
Are they both correct?

According to the rule found here:
post 10813
Travelling/Traveling
In American English, in a multisyllabic word with a final consonant directly preceded by a single vowel, that consonant does not get doubled if the stress does not fall on the last syllable.
...
'prefered' should not be used since the stress does fall on the last syllable, even in American English...

However, I find it is used, although less common...

So... what do you prefer?

The same question may apply to:
referred/refered

8. I didn't use spell check.
But your post tells me, the correction is more of an insult.

7. No. But society and people sure are interesting.
Honestly, to me the answer is it should not matter. Why does it matter to us? Why do we focus on marriage, sexual orientation and politician's personal lives so much? We do it to Rethug politicians too. Even I have done it.

14. I used an even worse word first actually.
I wrote "sexuality" -and then I thought that I would be attacked for it. So I changed it, trying to be sensitive -and guess what? I used a phrase that offended people despite my intention to NOT do so.

When the first poster to notice it pointed out my mistake, I apologized sincerely. Then my apology was further scrutinized and persnicketized.

I really had not intention to insult -and you can believe that or not - but I really think that you can take this a little too far.
Maybe it is generational, maybe linguistic, or maybe I just wasn't careful enough.
Anyway, like I said, I apologize and will use the correct phrase next time.
