1. I'm reminded of an experiment done on rats in the 50's

where they were put in a large contained environment and allowed to keep breeding until the enclosure became more and more crowded. Even though they were all well fed as a result of having too many rats in too little space they started going stark raving crazy and attacked each other and turned to cannibalism.

We might be seeing population pressure driving people crazy.

No country is more crowded than Japan, yet they remain supremely civilized, having adapted to crowding over centuries.

I suspect the problem is pressure on men who have absolutely no chance of finding wives and producing children thanks to widely practiced female infanticide and selective abortion of female fetuses.

8. A culture under extreme stress

Roaring through change like a freight train is taking its toll.

The less educated and superstitious populations of that giant are freaking out with no mental health practices in place.

The best book on China I have ever read is River Town by Peter Hessler who taught English in the Peace Corps to rural peasant young adults in the mid nineties.

His observations of the culture in the small city of Fuling are eye opening.

The huge gap between the "educated" and the unschooled and the enlarging gap of economic opportunities is wreaking havoc. Our own gaps are tiny compared to theirs.

I think we cast "western" eyes on the capitalistic changes and assume that cultural values are happening as well.

Not so.
