Life is short, but there is always time for courtesy--Emerson
This quote came to my mind when I read Skinner's thread...

It's easy to get caught up in the heat of the moment, and to rant at someone who's challenging you.

You don't need to attack someone in return.

I've learned to use the alert key, and to walk away...

DU can be a place for civil discussions; all we have to do is be courteous.

Peace out...

So true, so true. There is always time for courtesy, and if there isn't, then the life isn't worth living.

7. People personalize the debates. They've personalized their view of politicians. Not good. nt

14. Or they turn civil discussions into a debate.
I think most people come here for discussions, not death-match debates.

15. Part of the problem is that some people are grinding axes so loudly
that they can't actually hear what the other person is trying to say.

17. True.
I also suspect that the axe-grinding folks don't want to hear what anyone else has to say.

It might interfere with their closely held views...

21. Thank you Peggy!
This is the one main reason I spend less and less time here. I don't like to see it but worse, I don't like to be that way and when faced with the needless vitriol I see here directed at anyone with a different opinion I tend to become more and more discourteous myself. Worse, they way others are treated here who are in the minority. I hate that it can make me that way so I stay away more and more and live in relative peace and remain as courteous as I can possibly be while fighting the good fight.

Civil discourse is always a good thing but less and less possible these days apparently.

22. In Emerson's time, men still fought duels.
The custom was dying out, but a little courtesy could still save a life.

Mark Twain wasn't particularly courteous. He narrowly escaped fighting a duel. His views on dueling can be gleaned from Huckleberry Finn.

Did Emerson have duels in mind when he wrote this quote?

I have learned this the hard way.

Thank goodness for the wonderful people...somehow they rise to the top and I am glad for them.

28. It's all theatre, dear Peggy
A paradox. Sailing close to the wind in obeying the board rules is what makes DU lively. No one ever got rich delivering up good news 24/7.

I bet a deeply held conviction has never, ever, ever been changed by a thread on any internet forum.

30. You may be right; it may just be theatre...
But that doesn't mean we can't be nice about it, or at least civil...

No need to deliver good news either, 24/7.

Truth is good; civil truth even better.
