BP Underwater Oil Spill Video Gone from Gov't Site - Lucky I Saved it to Youtube

A video I posted last week on YouTube showing the first footage of the BP underwater oil leak has been taken down from the US Coast Guard site where I originally found it.

You can still watch the video here on YouTube where you can clearly see a column of oil pumping into the ocean. The sheer volume of oil gushing out is quite incredible - you can see it at about the 2 minute 15 second mark of the video.

ABC News is now reporting that BP is refusing to share underwater footage of the oil spill at the source. Two major leaks caused by the April 20 Deepwater Horizon oil rig explosion remain unmitigated, pumping an estimated 5,000 barrels of oil into the waters of the Gulf of Mexico daily.

Video shows oil flowing like steam from a geyser
By JEFFREY COLLINS, Associated Press

Video released by BP shows oil spewing from a yellowish, broken pipe 5,000 feet below the surface. The oil looks like steam rushing from a geyser.

The video released Wednesday gives a not-yet-seen glimpse of the leaking well a mile underwater. The stream occasionally can be seen becoming lighter as natural gas mixes into the gusher.

Natural gas has been flowing from the well since the beginning. BP's Doug Suttles says the rate natural gas has been flowing out hasn't changed in the 21 days since the Deepwater Horizon exploded in the Gulf of Mexico.

2. I bet they fucked up with top hat and knocked the kinked pipe off
thus allowing the spigot to be opened fully.

3. The spill is at 2:15. Before this the camera angle is much wider. Did they anticipate a problem
that they appear to zoom in?

11. This may have been part of the repair of the third leak.
Remember that there were three leaks and BP put a valve over one of them. Of course the volume of oil released did not change, but it lowered the number of areas to address.

8. I read it as "Oil Spill Video Game"

...and was thinking, "What bastard put a video game of this thing on a government web site."

12. What's sad is that I have a lot of good memories of the Gulf.
My nephew will be born in July and in all likelihood he and others young like him won't have the opportunity to share in those experiences.

I just hope they fix the leak quickly and the worst case scenario never happens.
