Why do the pics of the oil spewing out of the pipe look like

it is spewing to the side? I would think the drilling has to be verticle and the pipes whould have to be verticle too.

1. When the rig sank, it was still attached and pulled the pipes over

There was a diagram of how the pipes were twisted - think of a child's balloon and how the string would fold on itself once the balloon drops. But the "string" is heavy pipe and twists and kinks as it folds up. That is why there were more than a single leak to start with - some of the places where the pipe kinked, it split and leaked.
