But what about today?

However it seems some of the public (at least left wing public) intellectuals are also entertainers. Colbert and Stewart are constantly calling people on their bullshit.



No idea as for non-political or right wing intellectuals.

Obviously, Hitchens, Vidal even on his last legs, the two Naomis (Wolf and Klein), Tariq Ali, Cornel West, George Monbiot,
George Will (bless his little heart), and I would add in a comedian, Jon Stewart. Seeing Stewart able to take on anyone in his very short interviews is not that of an uneducated "comedian" rather, one of amazing intellectual depth and breadth.
