Hummer-cam
The baby hummers are nearly two weeks old and quickly outgrowing their nest. It must be uncomfortable for the mom because she only stops by to feed them.

The camera is zoomed in - the nest is only the size of a golfball.

3. It's been so cool to watch them.
I've been peeking in since the second one hatched. They're supposed to start fledging in another week or so. I think they're itching to start flying now!

4. I thought we were gonna be looking at a parking lot with oversized automobiles.
Maybe trying to park in spaces made for normal-sized cars. Instead, we get cute little birdies. Oh well.

5. If they could talk I think they'd say to each other:
"Oh for pete's sake, would you move over?"

It's looking a little snug in that nest. I'm so glad they're growing and healthy. :)

6. We have a tree rose by the back door
which attracts hummingbirds. I had a feeder out there and they would come to the glass slide door and tap on it when it was empty..I need to get another feeder I bought this one at lowes and the metal part looks /feels like copper plated aluminum..its not its all rusty on the inside of the lid. The glass is fine though.
The door was open the other day and he flew right into the living room..and back out fast..4 medium large dogs noticed him right away!

We have feeders out at the back end of the yard for the wild birds.. we get finches, and about 30 other species of wild bird they get the bugs out of the garden too.

7. That is so cool!
Hummers come right up my head sometimes when I'm out in the yard. I think it's pretty cool that they let you know when the feeder is empty. Do you make the sugar-water yourself? What proportions do you use?

11. I have been watching on and off since 2 clutches that didn't hatch.
Edited on Sat May-22-10 04:32 PM by Lisa0825
I tuned back in right before her first egg of this clutch started to hatch! It's amazing how fast they have grown. Phoebe is such a beautiful little thing! Isn't it amazing that the eggs were only the size of tic tacs??

After the clutch before last, I was disappointed to not see anyone hatch, and someone in the chat pointed me toward Molly the Barn Owl. I have been an owlcoholic ever since! Three of her four owlets have taken their first flights this week! Very exciting!!!

14. I was also disappointed about the other batch.
At the risk of making you hate me... here's another nature site. It's on a wildlife preserve in Africa. You'll see all kind of critters at the watering hole. It's night there now but save the link for later tonight. When you first open the site there's a pretty graphic meth ad.

18. I used to be an africam addict!
Then I was without internet at home for a while and forgot about it. I'll have to check it out again once the owlets move along :)

One day at the watering hole, I saw a zebra get bitten on the ass by a lion! It got away, and I was sooooo glad! You could still tell which zebra it was for about a month because the wound was obvious on the rump!

They are still practicing flying.... will be around a week or two longer for hunting lessons before they are ready to stake out their own territory.

edited to add: If we are lucky, they might lay another clutch here soon after the owlets leave... or one of the owlets might decide to settle down here.

20. It's fascinating. I'm addicted. It's like the Truman Show for hummingbirds.
I lurk there all day and have the video feed to my bluetooth speakers when I'm stuck inside.
