Back in the day we had a dandy party pooper. He had married one of the gals in our crowd and we, of course, welcomed him to our gatherings. It didn't take long to begin wishing that we'd been a little less hasty in extending that welcome. He deemed himself a font of very necessary information and assumed that our lives would suffer without his input. And his 'input' was incessant, from interrupting a conversation to correct your grammar to suggesting a better recipe for your next dinner party.

Even with all that, we thought he was kidding when he went into high dudgeon at having been royally bested at Scrabble, until he picked up the board and threw it at the winner. We really shouldn't have been surprised, we'd seen hints of that kind of behavior on league night at the bowling alley when we failed to comprehend that HE was always supposed to have the high game and that our 'sabotage' was not appreciated. But for sheer drama his best scene came at a backyard birthday BBQ; he'd begged off since he'd picked up a stomach bug, so we were a bit surprised when he came through the gate and dragged a chair to the table to sit next to his wife. He was thoughtful enough to have brought his own bucket, which he kept handy for the duration.

That was well over thirty years ago, and his ex-wife eventually reclaimed her life. I haven't seen the guy since that unpleasant BBQ episode, but the last few weeks I've found myself wondering if he hasn't started posting on DU.
