On Joy Behar, whack job Pam Geller spouting off her opposition to a mosque
Edited on Wed May-26-10 08:12 PM by muntrv
near ground zero, saying it promotes "jihadism" and that "it's insensitive to the victims to put a mosque near ground zero." She also denies that Muslims were killed in the 9/11 attacks.

1. I wonder what this nutjob has to say about Michele Bachmann's friend
Saying that there are Muslims who want to execute gays, and that they're putting us to shame.

Silence from her, wonder why.

2. I'm confused, are you saying Muslims (and Xians and Jews and bla bla) do NOT
think we gays should be executed? EVERY "major" religion holds that view. Even the ones that don't say it explicitly out loud maintain the position. Maybe I missed the point of the post, but I despise every so-called mainstream religion because their existence foments and feeds on bigotry and hatred of the "others."

Bah.

3. I can remember when she posted at littlegreenfootballs...
...she had the 'n00k mekka' fanboys all hot & bothered.

The owner of LGF eventually gave her the boot for being a racist whackjob.

5. I don't want to see a mosque there either.
But not for the reasons that Pam Geller or Joy Behar may put out there.

I believe a multi-cultural, multi-faith (and no-faith at all) center devoted to peace would be a much greater contribution than another religious shrine. Islam, Christianity, Judaism, Hindu, Buddhism, etc. etc. - all would be welcome to come and meditate, see photos, leave notes or memorials - whatever.

Having a single religion claim that place, a central, highly public place, near such a culturally significant area such as the World Trade Tower calamity that had such global implications is dead wrong, imho. It's the absolute worst message to send on many levels.

7. I don't know who that woman is, but I'm not sure that a mosque there is a great idea either.
Edited on Wed May-26-10 10:08 PM by Beacool
Feelings are still raw and many people here feel that it's a slap in the face to have them near Ground Zero. Why not choose another location?

My town lost more people than any other town in NJ and I was at the North Tower that morning. I saw enough people die that day to last me a lifetime. I have very mixed feelings about the whole thing.

Would it be appropriate for the Germans to build a cultural center at Auschwitz or the Japanese at Pearl Harbor?

:(

14. Last time I checked, German isn't a religion.
Those who are against a mosque legally building a place of worship have misplaced feelings of anger which need to be addressed.

15. I never said that German was a religion, but the analogy is valid.
Most of the family of the survivors don't want the mosque and its cultural center built at the site.

31. Funny you should mention Pearl Harbor
Visitors to the Arizona Memorial are about equally divided between Americans and Japanese.

Neither are there celebrating.

8. I'm not against it
"Imam Feisal Abdul Rauf, a leader of the Cordoba Initiative, said he has been surprised by the vitriolic debate, since he has led his congregation ten blocks north of the World Trade Center for the past 27 years. His mosque lost several members on 9/11 and distributed bottled water to firefighters afterward.

Rauf said he plans to meet with the 9/11 family members who do not support the Cordoba House.

Rauf said emphatically that the center was “not a mosque. Though it will contain space for up to 2,000 Muslims to pray, it will also host many athletic and cultural events, possibly including the Tribeca Film Festival, he said. The Cordoba House may also include a memorial to those killed on 9/11.

“We want to rebuild this community,” Rauf said. “This is about the vast majority of moderate Muslims who want to be part of the solution.”"

The group has no ties to any radical/extreme groups. I've read it's to be more like a Y with multicultural/secular events. I also like that they're thinking about including a memorial to 9/11, which is quite appropriate considering the congregation lost members in the terrorist attacks as well.

20. Thanks for the link but everyone seems to be in agreement it is a mosque
containing enough space for 2000 Muslims to pray....

5 times/day.

That's a pretty singularly devoted, large amount of space (in Manhattan!) devoted to Islam.

I believe that if the city of NY is going to allow a group to try to create a "healing" space, a multicultural space, an interfaith (or no faith at all) space, then one single religion shouldn't be the focus. And it seems as though this is the premise behind this building.

I'd far prefer that this space had no religious orientation at all. A community center with a quiet room, a memorial to 9/11, plus the secular/multicultural events would be welcome imho.
