UK Guardian reporting now that Top Kill is not going to work
http://www.guardian.co.uk/business/2010/may/28/bp-shares-drop
"BP shares drop as clean-up cost approaches $1bn"

City informed that 'top kill' procedure to block oil leak in Gulf of Mexico will not work on its own as ocean experts warn of 'unprecedented disaster'"
-----------------------------------------------------

I think they are the only ones reporting this right now.

3. This is not Good News.
What can be done from here?

What are their plans beyond Top Kill and Junk Shot?

The ramifications of this thing being allowed to gush indefinitely are unfathomable.

If BP cannot do it, the world needs to come together to figure this out because the longer it goes, it will affect ALL of us, eventually.

15. It's saying that they were going to try the 'junk shot'
Edited on Fri May-28-10 04:54 PM by muriel_volestrangler
The story was put on the site 12 hours ago, and what it's saying is:

He said BP engineers would soon use additional materials to try to plug the well, suggesting heavy mud deployed so far would not work on its own.

The point being that this story, in their business section, shows the result of the engineers saying they were going to have to try the junk shot, when the British stock market had been open for a couple of hours. BP's chief operating officer had said that when the British stock market was alreadt closed for Thursday.

4. The headline does not exactly match the text.
The relevant portion appears to be:

"He said BP engineers would soon use additional materials to try to plug the well, suggesting heavy mud deployed so far would not work on its own. "It's quite a rollercoaster," he told reporters on a conference call."

So it's an issue of approach more than an absolute "this isn't going to work."

6. So it is not a complete failure yet?
There is still a chance for this to work with additional Materials?

13. I am neither an engineer nor a scientist, and I could not tell you.
But certainly the article doesn't say that it is a "complete failure" at this point.

16. It failed. Only 10% of the mud stayed in the pipe above the
oil. There isn't enough mud to do it. Two junk shots were attempted and didn't reduce the flow. They have likely made it worse through greater erosion.

18. It does indeed appear as if this attempt failed.
But that is not necessarily an indicator of the hopelessness of the whole process. It's not looking very good right now, though.

9. It does seem to be a bit contradictory.
Seems a good example of how not to write an article.

10. Because the title is a deliberate lie. I have no idea why the OP'er did that. Don't care.

14. NYT and Finanical Times are reporting that top kill failed.
Also, that two junk shots also failed. Less than 10% of the mud stayed in the pipe.

19. Hopefully their articles are a little less equivocal than the one I unfortunately posted.
My friends in the UK are saying that they have heard that it has failed as well.

17. ABC News reported last night that Top Kill had failed and that a junk shot was next
The usual suspects in the faith-based faction denied that BP had failed:
