(Turkish PM) Erdogan tells Israel in Hebrew: Thou shalt not kill
Erdogan tells Israel in Hebrew: Thou shalt not kill:
Turkey accused Israel on Friday of breaking biblical commandments against killing and said it could cut ties with its one-time ally to a minimum after nine Turkish activists died in a raid on a ship bound for Gaza.

"I am speaking to them in their own language. The sixth commandment says 'thou shalt not kill'. Did you not understand?" Prime Minister Tayyip Erdogan said in his harshest words yet since Israeli commandos raided the Mavi Marmara on Monday.

--snip--

The incident has brought their relationship to the brink and Turkey has already recalled its ambassador to Israel. Speaking on television Wednesday, Turkish President Abdullah Gul said relations between the two countries "will never be as they were before."

"Israel has made one of the biggest mistakes in its history," he added.

Also Friday, Turkish media reported that a prosecutor in Istanbul has started collecting evidence for a possible case against Israeli officials in the wake of Israel's commando raid.

The reports said the prosecutor has been gathering testimony and evidence from Turks who returned from Israel in order to determine whether Turkey should open a case demanding compensation from Israel or even pursue criminal charges against Israeli leaders.

A small snippet from his speech, including his quoting of the "Thou Shalt Not Kill" commandment in 3 languages, can be found here at DU or here at YouTube.

4. The genocidal Turks are preaching against murder? ABOUT TIME!
I'm sure the Kurds are rejoicing. The Armenians are, of course, dead.

6. I just finished a study on the Armenian Genocide
the effort the Turks make at denial is enormous. They need to own up to that before they start pointing fingers at anyone.

9. seriously, don't they realize they have no right to be upset about
their citizens being murdered. It's just so obvious. :spank:

please... Just like we complain when our citizens are killed (by anyone other than Israel i mean) even though we wiped out the natives of our own country.

but you just keep sticking up for Israel... :)

11. It seems some are learning from mistakes of the past.
Others are using past atrocities as an excuse to commit their own.

I'm curious, but just how many future generations have to pay for the mistakes of their elders?

Israel badly miscalculated and the US is foolish to cover up with them.

17. Anyone remember the Kurds?
Or have they gone down the memory hole during the latest "Israel is the source of all evil" mantra? That this turd of a person has the balls to lecture anyone about murder (and people here are letting him) is just more evidence that Americans are very selective about whose lives count.

21. Turkey remembers the Kurds

Every time they bury a Turkish citizen after one of the PKK's attacks within Turkey's borders.

22. The incident with Israel happened on the exact same day as 5 Turks were...
Edited on Fri Jun-04-10 03:48 PM by Poll_Blind
...killed by a PKK attack and the same weekend over which another 5 Turks were killed by same. Part of this issue, whether it makes sense or not, is the fact that part of the Turkish citizenry has Israel and the PKK intertwined. I noticed this in opinion pieces and comments in some of the non-English Turkish websites I'd translated with Google. The two have nothing to do with each other, obviously, but they've been conflated because of their timing, by some.

Also, and this is shockingly bad, but many of the Israeli protesters outside of the Turkish embassy in Israel are actually holding pro PKK signs. I pointed this out in the video thread of that demonstration here in the DU video vault. The protests are still going on in Israel and there are still pro PKK signs being held by some of the Israeli demonstrators.

Every time Turkish media/news shows video of the Israeli demonstrations and the Turks see the pro PKK sentiment it makes Israel look 1000x worse.

Just a totally weird little tangent which I don't think many people are aware of and which has a real inflection on this story, at least from the Turkish side.
