Rachel Maddow looked so ill - possible oil/dispersant related?
Edited on Fri Jun-04-10 02:19 PM by truedelphi
Immediately upon turning on the Tube to watch Rachel last night,I was struck by how puffy her face looked. Her eyes looked like the area around them was swollen.

Her face looked swollen also.

Toward the end of her broadcast on one or two occasions, she slurred her words.

It looked like she spent a great deal of time yesterday out on the Gulf, inside boats taking her to view the effects of the oil spill. Although she was wearing sensible shoes, the biologist from Tulane University was in hip waders, totally protected.

RM - if you read this, get some glutathion immediately and take a dose and a half. (Available at a health food store, including GNC.) Scientist/researcher Marc Lappe recommends this product to anyone who encounters toxins.

Maybe see an acupuncturist. If you can afford the time away from work, maybe chelation?

Parkinson's is now deemed by many to be a toxin-consumption related event. I believe that in many cases, MS is formaldehyde related. Goddess herself probably doesn't know what is in that Crap Dispersant.

And the rest of us can keep our fingers crossed or pray that this fine person returns to full health.

5. She might need more recovery than that
but all the health food crap won't do a thing.

Poisons are sequestered by our livers quite effectively, it just takes some time to do it. Yes, the hip waders would have helped.

They might have helped for the snake oil, too.

9. If she can smell it, it's in her body and doing harm.
Unprotected spill workers are getting sick enough to be hospitalized. This stuff is toxic and the smell is drifting into homes all over the coast.

I don't know how bad it is or will be. It's different substances, but I live 32 blocks from Ground Zero and after 9/11 I went from needing an inhaler two or three times a year to four or five times a week for the next five years. And then it went back to what it had been.

Stuff in the air can make you sick.

44. My first time back to NYC after 9/11
was a year later. I took the train to Rector Street to meet my sister at the just-reopened Winter Garden. As soon as I got to the street I smelled and sensed that the air was still messed up.

I worked in lower Manhattan for years. I know how the air is normally. It blew my mind that a year later, I could still smell and feel crap in the air. Went straight to my throat.

77. Think about the sanitation workers cleaning that ash day after day.
We remember and honor our cops and firemen, but the sanitation workers who cleaned lower Manhattan? The fires went on, I don't know how long, the ash kept coming back, the place looked snow-covered. And they waded in and got rid of it. It covered everything, it was full of heavy metals and they got rid of it.

Like the people who are out there cleaning the oil. But I don't remember anyone thanking the sanitation people.

I never identified the smell as burning, oddly enough. To me it smelled dank and musty, like someone disturbed a mummy's tomb.

46. A few salient facts.
Accupuncture has been found effective for many types of pain, and given that almost all pain is made worse or caused by inflamation that we a visible symptom, then it could be helpful.

Secondly chelation does work. Your belief or disbelief does not constitute refutation. Whether or not it would be effective in this case is a matter of lab tests to detirmine what heavy metals are present if any. Not all that you decide is woo actually is (and please don't post anything from Quackwatch - they are too quacky for me and anyone else who reads peer reviewed literature.) Here is a wiki link (not peer reviewed but it is able to be accessed for those who don't subscribe to research service). http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/DMSA

Thirdly, glutathione is necessary for phase 2 liver methalation which is the main system in the body to process and remove heavy metals from the body. However I would never purchase over the counter.

All of these suggestions are sound but I would recommend that Rachel see a doctor who is trained in Functional Testing so that she can detirmine is a problem exists that can be traced back to exposure to toxic chemicals.

69. How is it that you do not see the problem with some
random DUer offering a diagnosis and treatment regiment for a person he or she has never met, and only based on some perception of facial swelling, which may or may not even exist?

The argument is not against chelation or any other therapy. It is against amateur diagnosis and prescription by people not qualified to do either.

You forgive me if I am not convinced by your argument, which is not even to the point.

FWIW, she's appeared to feel unwell on the show before. I hate to play Dr. Frist, but puffy face, bags under the eyes and being a little slurry sounds like allergies and allergy meds to me, which would make sense considering she filmed outside for a while.

She lives and works on the east coast. Traveling to the Gulf coast and doing her shows is tiring. When people are tired, their eyes are often puffy.

OR! Extreme orbital edema is a symptom of nephrotic syndrome. Maybe she's developed kidney disease!!11!

8. You're suggesting chelation based on a video diagnosis?...
From the American Heart Association:

Can chelation therapy be dangerous?
EDTA isn’t totally safe as a drug. There’s a real danger of kidney failure. (renal tubular necrosis). EDTA can also cause bone marrow depression, shock, low blood pressure (hypotension), convulsions, disturbances of regular heart rhythm (cardiac arrhythmias), allergic-type reactions and respiratory arrest.

In fact, a number of deaths in the United States have been linked with chelation therapy. Also, some people are on dialysis because of kidney failure caused, at least in part, by chelation therapy.

http://www.americanheart.org/presenter.jhtml?identifier=3000843

Chelation should only be used as a treatment for heavy metal poisoning.

Equipment and setting it up in her basement...

But once you are impacted with toxins, you need all the suggestions in the world to consider.

The way out of a toxified body, especially if formaldehyde and other heavy metals, and VOC's could be part of the damage being done, is a most difficult one.

Rachel is one intelligent person. If she needs de-toxifying, she will figure it out.

But I do run a medical clinic and for once in my life I find myself in complete agreement with Sid.

DMSA should not be used without a doctors supervision which will include functional lab testing and close follow up monitoring. Do we use DMSA at our clinic, you betcha. But mostly it is used to provoke a heavy metal flush just prior to a lab test to ensure that we have accurate results.

67. Did I say that this was what the woman should definitely do?
I posted this out of concern for Rachel. I was concerned about the way that she looked last night.

Should she go to a GP, she will get the run around. That is a given. Headache? She is tired or under stress, the physician will say. Skin rash - same thing. It is that her job is demanding, or her airplane travel caused jet lag.

If she continues having major symptoms, she will probably still be told that she is tired and under tress.

For most of us who have been severely compromised health wise from toxins, we have gotten this run around.

And we eventually have to go to practitioners who're a bit out of the box. However as time has gone on, there are more and more doctors who have attended med school and are there to help.

You can laugh, but sooner rather than later, you yourself, or someone you know will be hit with a lifestyle severely altered by what Rachel is possibly facing. A substantial numbers of Americans have had this happen to them.

Period.

So very sorry that it offended those it offended.

If it amused you then, goodie, as this has been a tough week and we all need a laugh.

56. I hope the moderators DON'T lock the thread.
What we are doing is NOT giving medical advice. If we were talking to Rachel in person and presenting ourself as a doctor we would be. But that is NOT what is happening here.

I don't happen to agree that this is advice that Rachel should necessarily take without the advice of a doctor who is trained in functional medicine (or perhaps a licensed naturopathic doctor (only available is some states)). However no one here is making the representation that they are a doctor and giving doctor level advice. So get off your high horse.

And yes, if you are having allergy attacks you are being chemically poisoned - the only question is what chemical or substance is causing your body to exhibit the typical hyperinflamitory immune response that characterizes allergy attacks. Is it pollen. BTW you have my sympathies. I don't have those kind of allergy responses but we see plenty of that kind of suffering in our clinic.

Was meant as an expression of concern for Rachel.

Most of you who are all under the age of forty five can laugh all you want at the suggestions of acupuncture. But wait until some cancer invades your system, and the chemo and radiation do little to help you.

Most of you have never been impacted by a heavy duty chem poisoning. If you are, and your GP tells you it is all in your head, and offers no solution, you start looking for solutions.

I first had Multiple Schlerosis symptoms way way back in 1994. The advice of several research scientists, among them Marc Lappe, kept me from being all out sick.

i usually keep those symptoms at bay by avoiding all exposures to chems, and by eating lots of the greener greens - thistle, dandelion, and others and taking glutathion. I also am pretty much forced to be living in the more rural part of the world.

Some of the people laughing hardest at my remarks will be affected at some point in their life time. It is now known that 6 to 15% of the population cannot tolerate many common place chems, including smoke from nicotine cigarettes. These numbers are increasing every year. If you're bothered by cig smoke, you are probably ten years away from being afflicted with more pervasive symptoms.

I was in Katrina and dealt with all the crap after it for a year and a half until I had to leave. The stress and always in your face of that was such you couldn't escape it and certainly with the odor, the stress of financial losses, and pain from it, it takes a toll. I saw people come in after Katrina and when they saw the actual horrors they cracked and it is possible Rachel saw so much that took her down and stressed her that it showed. I for one could understand it.

Oh yah - it wasn't the approved MineralMan method trademarked concern. Concern, as we all should know, is only legitimate if it is given in a way that meets with MM approval. C'mon dude. Lighten up.

And not all of the advice was bad necessarily. See another post of mine. I don't agree with it based on a video (Terry Shiavo, anyone?) but in the proper clinical setting with the proper diagnostic tests ... it could be just what the doctor ordered.

24. I can tell you this
When someone like Rachel goes into and sees the horrors it affects them. I would tell people coming into the area after Katrina to be aware that what they would see would have a depressing and troubling affect on them that might cause trouble sleeping, and other related issues. I can't actually recall one who didn't admit to me afterwards they had tried to heed my advice and even with it they found it affected them more than they thought. They usually got over it for the most part in a couple days and while the horror of their memories never went away, their depression and fatigue did. I am sure Rachel is experiencing such and she probably is worn from it since it really is a hell of a thing to see.

Except for the recommendation of glutathion. Which was given tome by an expert, Marc Lappe, and I feel glutathion is invaluable as far as remedial agent for inadvertent exposure to toxins.

34. I think Rachel is sick at heart.
She has never been in that area before. So while she absorbs the beauty and breadth of the area, she realizes at the same time it will be irretrievably damaged. It's like meeting a different person you become
enchanted with and realizing they won't be there for long.

I think it makes her angry and sad. I think she was furious last night, but what she got through to people with was her passion, disgust, and the sadness behind it all. The sadness was in her face and eyes.

When JFK died, the WaPo columnist Mary Mcgrory told Daniel Patrick Moynihan,"We will never laugh again."
Moynihan, who worked for President Kennedy responded, “Mary, we will laugh again. But we will never be young again.”

I don't think Rachel will ever be young again.

this oil spill is really doing to the gulf states.. a way of life, tradition, what makes us live on shitty wages and deal with asshole pukes and republican dicks in charge is because it becomes you. Its like having a piece of your heart ripped out... Its losing a family member... Its really hard to describe in words the emotions of watching the destruction of the gulf and the coast and the animals..

So. Think good thoughts, say a prayer, whatever. Anderson Cooper is down there as well.

While you're thinking of them, think of the thousands who are now out of work due to this, and those who live on the beaches who will become ill as well.

79. She mentioned it on her show Friday night. Said it hit her as soon as she got out there.
Said the oil smell is overwhelming, and she immediately felt dizzy, and almost drunk, as soon as she got out there. She was on a boat when she discussed it. She compared the smell on the water to the smell of a very dirty garage, or something similar. I didn't hear the words she used right before saying "garage" clearly enough, as I had gone out of ear range for a moment.

She said something about the smell being so heavy, pervasive you could easily feel claustrophobic.

She made a big point of mentioning it explicitly on her last show there.

Thanks for mentioning the tweet. No doubt we'll hear more about it.

Most of her reporting is done outside, and anyone who has spent time in a tropical place can tell you how the heat saps your strength..and then breathing in petroleum fumes is no picnic either..

The people at MSNBC, always "pretty her up" and on location, she's just being who SHE wants to be..sans make-up & the fancy blazers..:)

Having lived through some of the toughest times ever back in 2005 until 2007, and just getting back on my feet over that horrid two year period, I have this to say;

One: Someone here on DU kept me alive, in the soul sense of the word "alive" and I have put that wonderfulness (from them to me) into my feeling for this board ever since. Every person on it. All of the posters here. I even took several people off ignore, and one of them has grown over the last eighteen months. And posts entirely differently than the way they used to.

Two: Those two tough years pretty much took away my sense of humor, at that point in time.

But now due to recovery, of the horrid illness my spouse faced, of the financial situation, of legal nightmares etc, I have my sense of humor. It is back in spades, and most problematic stuff makes me laugh, as nothing will ever be as bad as what I went through.

Three) I doubt anyone on this board can kill me. So if people want to be all "Neeener, Neener, Neener," maybe it means that they will kick their dog one less time. I can handle anything any poster here throws out at me.

Four: never again will I post any OP until after 10:30 Pm when my peeps on this board usually hang out. I can handle being picked on, by why deal with creeps when you can deal with "peeps"?

88. Memo from Rachel: Fumes make you sick
Fri Jun 4, 2010 7:04 PM EDT

Rachel just got back to shore from reporting in the Gulf of Mexico. She writes:

I am now back at the shrimp processing plant office, where we have our computer set-up. I'll work from here til the show.

I am surprised to say I'm really lightheaded and nauseated from the fumes of being out on the water with that much oil in it -- I feel awful, and my clothes reek.

What I saw in the bay between here and Queen Bess Island was 25x worse than the worst we saw yesterday.

Respond to a phone call, directly on account of my phone call to ____, and get on a plane from Washington and go to the area that I said was having a problem, and handle that problem (AND YES, WHEN THAT HAPPENED I WAS flipping AMAZED!) I never say "Never."

Anything is possible if you believe in something needing to happen. Buddhist principle number six "Poison into medicine."
