Poll question: Do you think a trillion dollars a year on the miltary is enough?
Since President Obama took over in January 2009, he has spent one trillion dollars on the military for each of the last two years. Take the base military budget, add in those emergency supplementals to keep the occupations going, add in the Veterans Administration budget, add in the nuclear budget and the black budget and Viola! One trillion dollars a year.

That one trillion dollars represents 53% of the discretionary budget, which pays for things like roads, bridges, teacher salaries, fire and police salaries, aid to cities and towns, Food Stamps, Welfare, Social Security and Medicaid to name a few things.

Since the military budget was $302 billion when dubya took over, I'm thinking a 65% ~ 75% cut is just about right. We can't afford to bring Democracy to anyone else.

3. Enough for what?
That is way to much for Tea and Crumpets.

For the largest military in the world to maintain an globe spanning empire, it seems just right.

The question should be "What type of nation do we want." Then we can decide how big a military we need.

The size of the military budget is a function of corporate control over all aspects of our lives. It is but one way that government priorities are perverted and corrupted so as to assist in the ongoing transfer of wealth from the many to the few. So long as the military is used to protect corporate interests, a very large budget is needed.

As we can see from the discussions about the catastrophe in the Gulf, quite a few here are promoting and defending the current arrangement, of having government be little more than a handmaiden to corporations. So long as that is the case, there can be no serious opposition to corporate domination of our lives and the government, so long as that is true, we must accept the military as it is. In for a penny, in for a pound.

6. Other
Cut it to the bare minimal necessary! I would suggest about 80%.

WE HAVE OTHER, MORE IMPORTANT ISSUES AT STAKE.

What good is being told you are being kept "safe" from the bogyman if your real enemies are currently poverty, hunger, joblessness, homelessness, societal decay and breakdown, infrastructure breakdown, energy problems, pollution, etc., etc.? I mean, they are there in your face and they are gunning for you, your family, your friends, your people.

9. Not nearly enough.
We can't seem to win any wars lately, and we've got a couple going right now. Katrina's destruction of NO was largely due to military error (might be wrong there). Speaking of NO, we shot people instead of saving them. We have to outsource many of our military activities to third parties.

Seems that maybe we need $2 trillion a year, just to be sure.

If you've read this far, and are taking it seriously...it's time to power the internets down for a while.
