1. It was obvious from the beginning...
...that the booms were nothing more than window dressing to make it appear BP had taken steps to protect the environment. These things look like kids 'water wings' and are no more effective.

2. If you have a moment, watch the video in my sig line,
That woman lays it all out - how IF it was done correctly, every single drop of oil could be contained.

But like you say, the BP "solution" was to use the flimsiest of the Booming material, and as Rachel pointed out tonight, those booms are not checked on by workers according to a schedule. So the smallest of waves allows the oil to penetrate the barriers.

9. They. Don't. Care. About. The Environment.

They only care about profits. Allowing BP to be in charge has allowed them to conduct this whole affair as an exercise in PR and liability control instead of what it is, ecocide and human tragedy.

Oh well, that's Capitalism for ya.

Of course it's inevitable right now to be pissed about BP and focusing on BP but it isn't as though they are exceptionally greedy or reckless in any way. It could have been one of a dozen corporations - it is the economic system itself that leads to this disaster. And it will lead to the next disaster as long as we rely on 'regulation' to save us. Cuz it doesn't work. And anytime it does work, it won't last. Count on it.

Now MSNBC needs to replace the mid day news babes with Amy Goodman. Then they kick ass.

12. The fruits of the unfettered free market

Protecting the environment isn't profitable, therefore corporations do it exactly to the degree they are forced to do it. Which, apparently, is pretty close to zero.
